If the timing was out of whack would that be a possibilty? Or?
Also I'm thinking installing some Hedman headers on this 1988 F-350 1 ton dump anyone know of any modifications/alterations that might need to be done?
Thanks in advance!
If I had a magic wand,I wouldn't have any problems.
I am just curious if backfiring was a result of a blown manifold gasket/exhaust leak or a timing issue. Sorry for the confusion.
Also I found some headers brand new Hedman for 50 bucks and I was curious about any problems with installation on a 1988 F-350 2 wd 1ton with a manual transmission.
I'm always open to suggestions sarcastic or not thanks for the laugh.
yes it COULD be the timing what i did was take a sharpi or something to mark the dizzy and the block and just turn it a LITTLE at a time just work with it if you dont have a timing light. and if it makes it worse then line the marks that you made before you messed with it. simple isnt it?
Yeah I had a Ford dealer run a diagnostic check on it the TPS was bad I changed it and the O2 sensor is supposedly bad also. After I changed the TPS the truck wouldn't start at all then I replaced the ignition module with no luck, then the coil and it fired right up.
I'm wandering if the TPS needs adjusted or should a shop do something like that? I only have the basic tool set claw hammer, vise grips, duct tape and bailing wire.
Anyhow thanks for the replies.

If you are experiencing popping thru the exhaust? yes a bad manifold gasket can cause this. the bad gasket will lean out the mixture and cause a lean pop in the exhaust! usually when your off the throttle. or gearing down.
I've gotten some TREMENDOUS backfires from a weak NAPA fuel pump that couldn't keep up with the carb when I had "my foot in it" pulling the camper. No problem once I got home and replaced it with OE. When the engine gets lean, it gets noisy! Took out a couple power valves with backfires before I installed the anti-backfire bowl screw in the old 4180.
