Can anyone help?

Hey guys,
I was doing an axle swap on my high boy cause the old axle was tore up from the last owner! anyway I guess the axle i got was a heavier duty dana 44. The closed knuckle on the first had 8 bolts going around it and the new one has 12! But thats not the prob... The problem is the left upper steering arm is not the same and the truck i got the axle off of is no longer avalible! Its gone! It bolts onto the driver side knuckle, and has alot bigger bolt pattern? any one have one? or know where to find one? I called around and the story i get is that the part is not one i can buy around here, i can get the king pin, but not the arm! Please help!

Thanks guys!

Let's find out about the axles as much as we can.

Can you decode both axles? Are there IDs anywhere on them?

where would i find a code? There are a few letters on the axles, like 44_ _ _?
Is that what you are talking about?

They can be found on axle tubes. Also, if a metal tag is still on the pumpkin cover, read what it says and report back.

My old axle had the tag the new one does not!

4 09 D4TA-RA
603479-1

Thats exactly how it is shown on the tag!
Also they are stamped on the differential;

Old: 446C
New: 446CF

I believe that means they are both dana 44!?

603479-1 Standard 4.09 1974-75 F-250 3/4 Ton Pick-up (Full Time Transfer Case)

D4 is a '74, and 4 09 means it has 4.09 gears. It matches.

The new axle is a 44CF? Then that's a Heavy Duty Dana 44. Almost like a Dana 60, but not quite there...it has beefier components over the standard Dana 44. If you can find the BOM on the HD44, we can tell where it came from.

I wouldn't know if a HD44 will bolt up to a standard D44 truck...but judging from your experience, I guess not.

I thought by the ribs in the pumpkin it was already a heavy duty dana 44, BUT the new one i have has much bigger closed knuckles and also has the ribs on the pumpkin? Its kinda strange? the axle housing it self is the same, everything else to the naked eye is the same, except the closed knuckles, and that stupid steering arm!!! Of course!

Im trying a nation wide search for the dumb thing. I tried all the junk yards within 75 miles and no 4x4 around my year (go figure)! So i guess wait and see! Unless anyone knows where i could find such a piece!?

Looks can be deceiving.

What's wrong with the old axle that you want to trash it instead of rebuilding it?

Well right now, it not under the truck the other one is...Lol
But when i purchased the truck the short side of the axle (driverside from diff over) is hollow! You can just pull the cover off by the wheel, which shouldn't happen and look in and see clear to the ring and pinion! So, i had no old parts to see what i needed, like how many splines on the axle shaft, the length of the shaft, also the ring and pinion are both missing teeth! Also was missing the front drive shaft! I just figured what it would cost to get those parts new, why not get a new/used axle! The one i got is complete (execpt that steering arm!) and ready to go in! That truck that i got the axle from also came with a bent driveline, which is ok i can have new one built...

I paid only $800 for the truck! The motor is in great shape and runs like a top...The only thing wrong was the front axle, due to being all-time 4x4!
