Fuel tank size

ive search and searched and searched and cant find nothing on the size of my fuel tanks. i have an 82 F100 long bed styleside dual tanks. idk if this matters but it has an 302 in it. ive been trying to get an decent fuel mileage measure but i just cant get it. 2 weeks ago my rear tank was on about 1/4 of a tank. I put 10 gallons in and the tank wouldnt take any more. i tried to pump more in cuz ive heard that the gas will splash up on the pump and act like its full when its not. but it wouldnt take any more. well today after goin 112 miles i was back down on a 1/4 of a tank on my rear tank. (i got a lead foot, some of the time) well i put 40 dollars in it 12.2 gallons how does this happen and it seemed like the tank could take more. but i did the mileage calculations anyways and its 9.2 mpg. so i have 2 problems. how many gallons will my tanks hold and what could be causing my crappy gas mileage. 302's should get around 12-16. my dad has a 95 f150 with 302 EFI nd he gets 12 city and 16 highway.

Some of the short beds had a 16 gallon tank. All other use the 19 gallon, and some people put aftermarket tanks in the rear that are 38 gallons. But stock, long bed trucks had 19 gallon tanks.

oh ok that helps alot. and i mean alot. ok second question is why other than my slightly lead foot is my gas mileage so bad i mean i drive in fairly heavy traffic in the mornings goin to school but not 3 or 4 mpg so bad. and also i have a fresh tune up less than a month ago. idk what it could be. maybe vacuum leak and if so how do i check that? and also im not even running the A/C thats the big thing

I assume you are running the Ford 2bbl carb? If so, they are famous for the power valve in the carb going bad and making the engine run rich, and get lousy fuel mileage. A lift and big tires is not going to help any either.

yeh its the ford 2bbl carb. i dont have a lift. ive got a little bit bigger tires on it. they are p235/75 r15's. that might explain why it smells at times like the engine is running rich. so just change out carb's and this problem should be solved for the most part except the heavy foot

You can get a rebuilt carb, go with a 4bbl manifold and carb(which is what I would do if you have the money) or if you are brave, put a kit in your original carb.

Go for it. Where do you get "new" Motorcraft carbs from? I didn't know they still sold them new.

If you ever saw the way they rebuild rebuilt carbs you would run screaming off into the woods before you'd buy one.

It's an assembly line where they throw all the old (for example) two barrel Motorcraft carbs that come in ...... some off big cars, some off small cars, some off big V8's, some off little V8's, sosme off luxury cars, some off economy cars, from any and all applications that use two barrel carbs ..... into big tubs.

These carbs start at one end of a dis-assembly line where lots of people making squat for wages start removing and throwing each component into a separate bin as it's being stripped off the body, the parts are cleaned, superficially inspected, and then all those parts in all those bins get put back on a re-assembly line and another batch of low wage assemblers randomly grab compontents out of these bins and "rebuild" A two barrel carb using parts from ALL those other two barrel carbs and put it in a box.

One time it took three carbs, three trips to the auto supply outfit and more than a few cuss words before I found one that would properly fit and hook up "close enough" to run (without extensive modifications) on a 303hp 389 Pontiac. I swore NEVER AGAIN!!

Find a good local carb shop to rebuild YOUR carb to YOUR specs SPECIFICALLY for YOUR application. If you want to upgrade they also sell carbs that they rebuilt the right way and can customize them, again, to YOUR specific needs. As Pat, MY carb guy, told me, "There really isn't much new in carburation and some of the old carbs are actually the best carbs if you know what to do to them."

My local carb guy has worked on my 4180 four different times in the last twelve years, he knows me, he knows my truck and has worked with me to get maximum performance and economy out of Clyde. We even eliminated my power valve failures. He's also hooked me up with people he trusts and recommends for other work I've needed done. In the long run he's saved me money on more than one occassion.

If you really don't know where to go locally ask around at a car show or cruise night. Happy carb owners are happy to share information.

Opinions may vary, but this is mine

I checked one place and a rebuilt carb is 216.00 with a $40.00 core. That's not cheap. Maybe you can find a used one just like it in the junkyard, and put a kit in that one. Then swap it on. If it doesn't work, take it off and put your old one on, and keep at it till you get it working. Or take the junkyard one to someone to rebuild, and then swap it in.
