I have an 83 F250 Super Duty 4wd. I had the alternator replaced and I think it's still good, actually beefed up to 100amps and new battery but something is draining battery. It will not turn over in the cold. Any help on where to start looking for the drain?? I have a new voltage regulator. I also have a plow with an extra battery run through a battery isolator. When I check the fuse board I do have open fuses(ones that light up when pulled) but it's stuff like horn, rear running lights.
Disconnect the battery negative lead from the battery terminal. Then put a test light, or ammeter, between the battery post and the battery cable.
The light should glow very dimly if at all, or the ammeter should show very little current flow. If the light glows brightly you have a drain, if the ammeter glows brightly you have a serious drain So start pulling fuses one by one till the light goes out. The fuse that puts out the light is the circuit that is causing the drain.
Also try disconnecting the voltage regulator and see if that helps, they can go bad and cuase a drain on the battery. Same goes for the alternator.
Dont forget about the dome light and under hood light. MAke sure these are off before you start troubleshooting, they have led many an experienced elctrician astray
Good luck.
