Hello everyone, I have a question & have always gotten fantastic results from everyone's input.
I have an 06 6.0 40K. All maintenance is completed on a regular basis with oil samples. Rear main seal replaces @ 1800 & bed pan seal @ 30K. No mods.
I am noticing a sharp whistle noise at startup & take off for the 1st 15 minutes or so.
It is not a belt. It does not happen all of the time, notice it when truck is just started & taking off from a stop. But then the noise goes away. I am thinking something in the turbo. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
if it is aside from the normal turbo whistle then i think it's more like possible blown head gaskets. you will notice if you read around on here one of the symptoms of blown head gaskets is something that sounds like a tea kettle whistle. is it very loud when it does whistle?
My truck makes the whistle noise every once and a while.. Some weeks worse then others, but do it every day.. Could it be a bad EGR instead of head gaskets?
Tea kettle whistle is a perfect match. I checked the degas bottle & all around under the hood... Everything is clean as a "whistle"...lol
Seriously though head gasket does make sense, just can't seem to find any other systems to agree with that.
Thanks All...
I love this sight...........
Do you have aftermarket gauges? If so are you over heating? Does the fan come on? These are other signs of blown gaskets. Can you smell coolant after you have been driving a while, such as at a stop sign or right when you park?
No aftermarket gauges & no signs of overheating. I am have some knowledge of overheating have replaced heads on other vehicles over the years. Oil is okay coolant okay. Although it is factory equipt for snow plow & trailer never plowed or pulled anything. I don't drive it everyday usually about 3 to 4 days out of the week. 90 percent highway.
Pete98Cobra.. I just had ARP head studs installed.. got them from Northern Auto Parts.. (they will negotiate so shop around and find a better price as they will match)
fxbalto... My Truck still "whistles" even after ARP head studs. I think it sounds like a pressure cooker sound. It only happens on hot days at 2500 RPM under load though. Most likely for you, it is the head gaskets. BUT, I talked to the Tech today and he said it also could be the exhaust pipe comming out of the back of the turbo.. they have been known to get slight cracks and at higher RPMs under load, they could also be the problem. Its rare, but it is possible and I am going to have to bring my rig back to the dealer with my boat on it to get them to hear the sound so they can hear it too. Just looking under the engine their is no obvious exhaust leak anwhere and I do have to work the Truck pretty good to generate the sound.
We will see.
Happy with the job they did though and Truck still runs real well.
Thaks for all of the info. I haven't driven the truck since Monday am will probably take it again on Thursday but definetley on Friday.
You guys have ginve me so much info, also went to some other post & found a wealth of knowledge.
I think what I am going to do is just pay extra attention & see where that get's me at this point. Maybe stop up at the dealer & talk to the mech. if they will let me. He is good at least I have been happy with him. Only problem he is the only one there & he gets very busy...... maybe try another dealer in MD. Anybody have any thought on that.
