that's wat i did w/ my 81, i just bought a jcv special at walmart, an adapter installation kit from advance auto parts and cut out the bezel to fit...worked pretty good actually, but i needed new speakers b/c the old ones were on their last leg. the radio installation and wiring was pretty easy, but installing the new speakers took some effort, and still kinda looks trashy, but hell, it's an old cattle truck, not like i'm pickin' up any ladies in 'er. i'll have to get some pics from mine so u can c.
I put a used JVC in my truck too used the factory speakers in the doors and put 2 sets of roadmasters behind the seat. Works great no problems. I just bought a new Panasonic stereo from a local car stereo shop with a harness for $118.00 with tax. Crutchfield is nice, but they are high. Look around.
If you want to buy a new bezel for a 85-86 look to our sponsors here or LMC

I would just call Crutchfield my mounting kit is 3 years old from crutchfield.
Try putting a 1986 f-150 with supreme sound in their search bar and see what it says my stereo came with everything I needed,Mounting Bracket(metal one its nice) wiring harness(can be bought at Best Buy still) and I also got speakers for my doors there and they came with the wire harness for the doors but if you don't have door speakers you will have to run the wires yourself and it is easy to do.
I had a 1982 f-250 before my 86 and it only had a AM/FM with dash speaker and I bought everything for the system I put in from Cructchfield but that was ten years ago but I told them it was for a 85 and had no problems, but I had a cheap plastic installation kit.
no hell ihad the original radio in my truck with new speakers behind the seat with new wiring. all i did was pulled the radio out. cut out a larger whole in the bezel and my truck was just electrical tape wired up undid the conections put the new radio in and hooked her back up most radios and speaker systems have similar color wires for +/- and left front etc. new wires like the gold and silver. gold is positive and silver is negative. it might help to get the connection adapter but thats just if your worried about wiring the radio up.
So you have a '82 F100 too? What kind of system did you put in?
i put a JVC KD-G140 i got from walmart for 80 bucks b4 taxes. Ive got 1 box behind my seat with a 6 1/2 in. speaker in it. alond with 2 4 in. speakers behind the seat im planning on building 2 boxes to put a 6x9 and 4 in. speaker in each box along with in the next few weeks ima put a 6x9 in my dash were the original speaker was.
Hi. I have a '82 F-100 Lariat, and am looking into replacing the radio with a cassette deck or CD player (just a little updating, I like to have my music with me in the car and FM gets boring...I hate our local radio station!).
I was wondering what all options are available to me. Would it be a fairly simple, do-it-yourself process or a professional's job? I'm not finding much help on the net with this make and model.
I really dont' care how it looks (I even thought about a small wireless stereo system, but those are pricy). I found a cassette deck and radio replacement system (www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=300&i=070XC4100&tp=5684) fairly cheap, but it said it would take some major modifications to my dash.
Any ideas?
Like everyone here has said this is easy and you can get everything you need from WalMart,Radio Shack, even Ebay. I have ordered Crutchfields catalogs and they make things harder than they really are. Go to the Boneyard and get a 85 or 86 Bezel it swaps right in and a install kit is like $20.00 at Wal mart with the stereo you want. You will come out cheaper and a stereo system that most likey as good if not better.
The reason you want the 85-86 radio bezel is the newer models are already cut for the newer style single DIN head units. The older bezels have the dual post setup. You can use the dual post bezel, but have to cut them for the DIN units. Even if you're really good at cutting, the bezel lines don't match the DIN unit and look like crap with the DIN unit installed. For $5 at a boneyard you get a much cleaner finished look.
