My 99 F-250 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel is all stock. When I start the truck after it has sit up a day or two my check engine light will come on. If I try to drive while the light is on, it feels sluggish. As soon as the light goes off it will run fine. Some time I'll turn the key to see if the light is on, if on I can turn the key off, and back on and it will go out. Other than when the light is on the truck runs fine. What should I look for or check out? I changed the oil about 3 weeks ago, but the problem has been doing it for about 4 or 5 months now.
Do you live in Alabama? There are plenty of Bama folks on this site and maybe one is close enough with a scanner to pull some codes and see what is triggering the CEL light andgive you a better idea of the situation.
yeah, there's a guy at work with a scanner, but we work on different shift, so we haven't gotten together yet. Just try to get some ideas on what it could be. The last time I scanned it, there was a Exhaust Back pressure Valve code on it, but it wasn't causing any problem back then.
No, no hissing, just feels like the engine has no power. Like its under a load. After you crank it and sit there you can't even tell something is wrong until you give it gas(diesel). It usually will go out fairly quickly. Once I get on the main road it will clear out. Or like I said earlier, if I turn the key on and back off it will clear out.
It almost sounds like the exhaust backpressure valve is closing, that's why I asked about the hissing. The best thing to do would be to get a scanner(make sure it speaks PSD) on it and pull the codes. Good luck.
The fix would be to just eliminate it completely. You don't really need it unless you live in a really cold climate. The ebpv is on the exhaust side of the turbo on the bottom. Someone on here has pics of the correct position of the lever, however, you can check it by grabbing it and trying to move it, it will be fairly stiff(stiff as in spring stiff)but should turn without binding.
It sounds to me like the truck is going in to a safe mode because of the initial code. Is it idling funny or anything else that you can describe when the CEL is on?
So you won't feel lonely, my truck does that once in a while. Same deal, turn key on, crank, truck starts and runs. It doesn't run like it should but runs OK. Within a few seconds or no more than a minute the SES light goes out and everything is normal. I noticed that my Edge Attitude didn't "start up" when this happened. Don't know what that means but when the SES light goes out the Edge Attitude lights up and all is well.
I figure it's a connection problem somewhere. It has only done this 2-3 times in the past few months. I've wiggled wires, checked connections, batteries are new, oil is new, air filter clean etc. It might be something in the programmer, it was on the truck when I bought it. I never use it for anything but gauges and leave it in the stock setting. THis truck has more power than I need stock !
I'll pay attention and see if you hit on anything. Mine hasn't bothered me enough to make me go and pull codes. I don't have a scanner but will find one if it gets any worse. Step one for me will be to pull the Edge Attitude out and try it for a while.
Good luck, somebody on here will guide you through this issue. It's a great site with great people.

Nope, it doesn't pull codes that I can tell. I never mess with it. Right after I got the truck I played with it a time or two. I think using it in the Extreme setting would break something sooner or later ! Tranny slams pretty hard. If I had the problem much I'd pull the Edge and try to see if that was it.
I don't know if the Edge is communicating with the PCM every time I start the truck when it's in the stock setting. Maybe somebody on here knows. If it isn't communicating or flashing the PCM then it probably isn't the problem. Who knows, maybe some Edge wiring connections are loose or dirty causing it to do this. I will get the codes pulled sooner or later and then I'll know something.
