Just a real rough stab at it since it's been raining pretty good here (finally). I haven't felt like laying down in the wet gravel trying to get an accurate reading, but looking at the front of the motor (bottom of front side of pan to top of alternator) looks to be about 31" or so. Measuring at the back (and really guessing from the bottom of the deep part of the oil pan to top of the turbo) looks to be a hair under 36"
i think if i were you i would consider swaping in an idi 7.3 wiring would be alot simpler and would still have plenty of power to move a station wagon around. i would also put a real high gear rear end in. something like maby 3.27's an idi in an station wagon with that kind of gearing and an overdrive transmission i would put money on 30mpg

The idi 7.3 are the earlier motors? Pre powerstroke I assume.
I would think that I could relocate the turbo on a PS to the front of the engine if need be. Just to give some background, this car is a project that Im completly restoring. Going to do a frame off resto. So fabricating the engine bay to fit something like this isnt out of the question. As well I definitly want the Wagon to have some real good power output.
I'm not totally educated on the diesels, so I'm trying to learn. Are there good add on turbo kits for the idi motors?
Thanks for all the input so far!
the big advantage i see for the idi in your case is the idi has a manual fuel injection pump and is not computer controlled like the powerstroke, much less complicated to wire in and will still have more than enough power for your application, in my belief i think the idi's are slightly better on fuel and have more off idle low end power than the powerstroke because of a higher compression ratio.
