I have a 94 ranger 2wd with the 2.3 and a 5sp , what might be causing it not to want to go into gear? It doesn't do it all the time , the fluid is clean and full and the clutch reservoir is full. It only has 89k on the clock and I'm the second owner and it is only used to go back and forth to work and light duty it's not been beat on that I know of . Any thoughts?
That particular year era has been known to have some clutch slave cylinder issues. I am not saying this is your issue but it might be worth taking a closer look, or a check out of what you can see of the system. The main system is located on the pilot shaft of the transmission. If you have to replace it you may as well do the clutch, pressure plate, and T.O.B. at the same time. I wouldn't worry about it unless it completely goes out. I had a 93' that went out on me right around 75K miles, and have read from several people here that have had it go out as well. Mine took a few months before it completely went. You can basically just inspect the lines to and from the bellhousing of your transmission that run to the slave cylinder reservoir on the fire wall. I don't know what else you could really check other than that...anybody else???? If it starts to go you will be adding fluid to the reservoir regularly.
Did this problem begin suddenly, after some event, or slowly over time????
You say that the tranny fluid is clean & full & that the clutch reservoir is full, so did it come about after changing the tranny, or clutch fluid maybe????
These systems are known to be a bear to bleed all the air out of the clutch hydraulic system.
So if the problem came about after a clutch fluid change, or if the slave or master cylinders are showing signs of weeping, you may have air in the system, or the master or slave cylinders may not be sealing well & bypassing fluid on occasion.
If you had just chaged the tranny lube, was it the correct fluid used & is it now at the proper fill level & are the tranny case rubber plugs still tight & the front & rear tranny seals not leaking????
When it begins to act out & be difficult to shift, does double clutching help?????
It just started about a week or so ago and it has only happened twice . It has always had a slight very faint grind on occasion going into third gear but nothing serious . I changed the fluid right after I bought the truck last year and I put the atf tranny fluid in it the the Carquest book called for . I put Wolfshead ATF in it and it shifted great that was about 3000-3500 miles ago . I crawled under the truck and the tranny appears to be wet on top . I read some where on this forum that it might be the shift rails leaking but that was along time ago as a matter of fact I think it was posted before I bought my truck . Anyway while i was under there I pulled the fill plug and fluid started dripping out a little so it's still full . Thanks for the help guys I don't want to ruin the tranny .I like the truck and can't complain on the gas mileage either .
Ok so the problem began a week or so ago & is intermittent.
The tranny lube has been changed & the level checked recently & it's Mercon, or Mercon-V, right?????
Have you installed floor mats recently, that could have slid up high enough to restrict the clutch pedal travel enough to cause incomplete de-clutching at times????
I had this happen twice on two of my 5spd manual autos.
Other than the wrong tranny lube, internal leaking/bypassing clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder pistons, air in the clutch system from the last fluid change, or worn syncros in the tranny I'm out of ideas.
The fact that it's just begun is a clue, but I don't know where to fit that clue right now, other than the floor mat idea.
Thanks pawpaw .I think you might have hit on something , the floor mat on the drivers side is always moving up . Yes the tranny has mercon type fluid in it and I have never messed with the clutch side of things other than to check the fluid level in the reservoir. If it continues after I take the floor mat out for awhile I'll start looking at other things to see if they might be causing the problem .
