steering columns 74 f100??????????

this truck has automatic tranny and recently the linkage broke inside the column i went to some numerous junkyards to find a new/used column to fit
in this truck to no avail. but one truck gave an idea they of must of ran into the same problem? they installed a hurst ratchet shifter into the floor this
vehicle was a late 80s/early 90s but a good idea. i guess my question is
would this be a great idea or no??? also the column is sound just dismantle
the existing linkage?? with the 74 there is a lot of room for the shifterwhat you think??????????

What part of the linkage broke?

The shift tubes used with the auto trans (the manual trans shift tubes are not the same), have no moving parts so they rarely break.

But it's quite common for the shift collar, and the selector lever that activates the NSS (neutral safety switch) to fail.

Both parts are still available from Ford and fit all 1973/77 F100/350's.

D5TZ7228A .. Shift Collar / MSRP: $59.45 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $ 42.80

DOTZ7B097B .. NSS Selector Lever / MSRP: $18.72 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $13.48

Also all trucks from 73-79 used the same column as long as it is 2wd. Later years 78-79 used a plastic lower shroud but even that bolts up to the older one just fine. There is some slight differences between them but they will all bolt up.

Which shift tube is this?

The seller makes no reference except for the length as to which shift tube they are offering.

There are five different shift tubes used from 1973 thru 1977. None are 26 3/8" long.

3 Speed Manual

1973's with Manual Steering (M/S) before serial number R00,001 use a shift tube that's 28 1/2" long.

1973's with M/S after serial number R00,001 and 1974/77's use a shift tube that's 27.93" long.

1973/77's with Power Steering (P/S) use a shift tube that's 26" long.

Automatic Transmission

1973/77's w/2WD & M/S // 1973/75's with 4WD have a shift tube that is 28 1/4" long.

1973/77's with 2WD & P/S // 1976/77's with 4WD have a shift tube that is 26 11/16" long.

You do not have to pull the column apart to replace the NSS selector lever ( DOTZ7B097B ).

This lever is shaped like a inverted Y and snaps onto the shift tube thru a slot in the mast jacket (steering column cover).

The tip is prolly snapped off...quite common for that to happen. It's made from spring steel, so it's flexible. Over time, it snaps into two pieces.

It takes about 5 minutes to replace it.
