Im curious to know what kind of MPG's you guys are getting out of your 7.3 L. Im looking at getting some sort of Diesle truck, and I have always been a Ford guy. However, I have heard alot of good things about the older 12 vaulve Cummins, and I like the 20 to 22 MPG's. Is it possible to get the Powerstroke around at least 18 MPG's? Can it get better? How much would i have to do too it? Could i get away with a Chip and exaust?
Also, how many miles can you expect to get out of a Powerstroke?
You are going to find all kinds of mileage claims and it mainly comes down to your right foot. Around town I get 15-17.
Driving to Reno, Nevada across the Sierras which is approximately 100 miles, up the hills and down the hills and running unloaded at 65MPH with 3.55's I got 20 MPG one way and 21MPG the coming back.
If I wasn't such a "Torque Freak" and liked to hear the turbo sing her sweet song............ I'd get better MPG around town.

Ain't that the truth! with my 3.55's I'm adverage around 20 mpg, depending on how much smoke I'm trying to put out. My last tank was alot of playing and heavy towing on hills and dropped me to 13
Dang! I was hoping it wouldn't rely on my right foot. That never works.
Thanks for the info though.
Lets say it was a best case senerio, and I bought a truck from an old guy who changed fluids religiously and babied it? Could I expect 300,000? Given I take as good of care as the previous did? Or is that just wishfull thinking?

300k if maintained shouldnt be a problem. One of our work vans is a 7.3 and its gonna turn 400k this week. Just normal oil changes every 5k and no major problems with it.
Unfortunatly that vans gettin replaced with a 6.0 in 2 months
on my way down to nj on Saturday I got 20 mpg. Thats with all the mods in my sig cruising at 70-75 mph on the highway for 250 miles. I go easy on the throttle though

two wheel drive 3.55s and and 5 speed consistent 20+mpg would not be at all out of the question and as far as how long these motors will last, im willing to bet properly maintained and not beaten to death it would be possible to get 500k out of one.
I thought there was a guy or 2 in here who had 500k on theirs?
As long as coolant and the oil is taken care of regularly, i dont see why a powerstroke wont get 500k.
Other stuff may brake, but the core will be good.
This is "third-hand", bu there's a truck dealership in Sun Prairie, down the road from here, my wife talked to a guy there who said he has a buddy with a PSD that has almost 800,000 miles on it. 'Course, I'd like to see a photo of the odo...
So, a '95 F250 4x4 5-speed, 3.55 LSD, dual tank, single cab, can we expect 20 MPG highway?
20 mpg highway is possible, if you keep it under 65 with 3.55 gears and accelerate slow, but it's difficult...
i average roughly 17. I wouldnt expect more than that with any diesel truck.
The cummins are just as bad on fuel unless you keep out of it. a friend of mine has a older 24V and cant break 15 mpg. and he drives decent.
