90 E250 Fuel Gauge/ Tank Selector/ EEC4

Hello- I have a 1990 E250 w/ a 5.0. The van has been parked for over a year w/o running. When It was parked the selector valve and fuel gauge worked fine. Now every time I switch it over to the Front tank, It will run for a min or two and then sputter and shut off.
Also the fuel gauge does not work for either tank.

My question is, Is the selector valve and fuel gauge tied together some how where the would both go bad at the same time and any ideas how to fix them?

I also got a code reader and am not sure if this van has 2 or 3 digit codes. Anyone know?

Thanks for your help,
Kevin

There is a fuel sending unit in each tank consisting of a pump and fuel level float, the switch just sends power to the selected tank. It sounds like you may have a pump problem or it could just be a corrosion problem, an older pump may not start if it is not getting a full 12v due to a corroded connector or a bad chassis ground. There should be a connector on top of the tank on this truck that looks something like this below, check here for the proper voltage..

Thanks for your help. So this Van does have a fuel pump in each tank? I ask this since my 89 F350 Diesel did not have any pumps in the tank.
Do you no if the tanks must be removed to remove the fuel pump if needed?
Since the fuel gauge is not working for either tank, it could possibly be that yellow wire on the sending unit is dirty or something?

Thanks again

Yes the '90 should have in-tank pumps only. You may have enough room to reach the top of the tank without dropping it, if so you may be able to disconnect the wiring and inspect the pins, as well as measure the votage reaching the tank. You'll have to drop the tank to get the sending unit out, I don't think there is an access hatch in the floor of the van anywhere.
