Simple 1993 alternator question...

I'm using dielectric grease on the electrical connectors of my truck as some preventitive maintenance.

I have two electrical connectors going to my alternator. The top one comes off easily (plastic hook-style).

I can't see the bottom one very well, and I can't feel any 'hook' that keeps it on. I do feel with my fingers that some part of the connector is of a soft plastic... does this just pull straight out? What holds it in/on?

It didn't seem to want to just pull out.

Thanks!

The soft rubber is a boot protecting the wire going to the battery from the alt. Best to leave that one alone. It has a 7/16's nut holding down the terminal. Hope this helps.

Yes, thank you, that sure does help! Now I'm not sure where the nut is (because I didn't feel one when I was playing around down there), but at least I know I'm looking for a nut!

And you say it's an american sized nut on a metric truck, huh? Figures...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Jan-02 AT 07:36 AM (EST)]On my truck the nut is SAE. All you have to do is gently pull the boot up and back down the wire to get to the nut. It has a recess that the boot sits in to seal it. It's shaped kind of like a boxing glove with a big hole in the palm. I know not the best description but this is all I can think of this early in the morning.

Before you put a wrench on that nut remember to disconnect the battery. Since this wire goes direct to the battery positive you could have sparks flying if you leave it connected
By using a mirror and a flashlight you will be able to see how it is attached and what shape it is in without removing it.

If the wiring goes into the side of the alternator, the harness connector pulls straight out without any holding bolts or clips holding it in, if the wire goes to the backside, then there is a nut holding it on, which should be a 10mm nut. Electric1
