Confused

Just told the guy at the gas station to put 10 gallons in my front tank that was very close to empty and he said it would only take 6. After I started the truck the front tank read less that it said before he put the 6 gallons in.
Did my sending unit just take a dump? I thought they would read full when they broke? I have seen that before. Or can it go either way?

i know it will read full with no/bad ground and empty with no/bad power source not 100% on how they can go if the sending unit just breaks
