Suspension and such

Ha all, just picked me up a 1977 F150 4x4 tonight. Two questions:

It has coil over shocks as well as leaf springs, is that right?

It has a 351M in it, only the 400 and 351M will bolt to the same bellhousing correct?

Unless it is a supercab, any 70's F 150 4x4 should have coil springs in the front and leaves in the back.

A 460 or 429 will bolt to the bell housing, too. Need different motor mounts and a few other things though.

Thanks for the reply Steve, I phrased my question wrong, the rear has leaf springs as well as coil over shocks looks a bit redundant.

Is there a way to visually tell the motors apart, or am I going to have to go hunting for a casting number.

Visually, no. It might say on the valve cover. Other way is to measure the stroke. The 400 will have a 4.00" stroke.

The coil over shocks may have been added at some time to help carry some more weight. The thing I don't like about coil over shocks in an application such as yours is that the shocks will put a lot of pressure on the upper shock mounts. These mounts are often rusty and need no more abuse than necessary.
