My Expy is acting weird: when I start out and am in the 15-25 MPH range, if I give it gas, the RPMs race up to around 3500 but the truck won't accelerate until I give it more gas (or back off the gas and step on it again) and then it gets into gear and the RPMs drop into the normal range. Whenever the tranny is in gear (other than in in Park or Neutral), I hear a loud kind of "whining" noise - a kind of "whoosh" sound to give it another description. It doesn't sound like metal scratching - just kind of escaping air. When I'm on the road and accelerating, it will sometimes "kick" into gear - a kind of jerk reaction.
I checked the transmission fluid and it's full - I looked underneath and did not see any damage to the transmission casing. Any ideas as to what this may be or what else I should check? I don't even want to think about the words "need a new tranny" because I'll drop dead right now.
Well, today was D-day for the transmission. As I was heading home I heard a "crunch"-type sound and after stopping at a traffic light, found that my Drive gear was gone - I had to change the gear to 2 and was barely able to get home. Along the way I smelled the wonderful aroma of burnt/overheated metal and after I finally pulled into my driveway, saw the last few drops of tranny fluid fall from the housing - I left a nice trail for miles. Is this typical of Fords/this truck? I have a little over 97K miles on it. I'll drop the pan and take a look at the damage - may not need another tranny (wishful thinking). Any bets as to whether or not I will?
Also, if I need another tranny, any recommendations as to where to get it? I looked at Jasper's, but they want $2300+, although it does come with a 3 year warranty. rebuilttransmissions.com ($1600) perhaps? anyone? anyone?

Mine went saturday. It was in the shop today it needs a rebuild but it's only costing me 1900 installed should have it back tomorrow. Mine was hanging up in 2nd gear. Anyhow fried the 2nd gear clutch and they found a lot of metal in the Torque convertor and valve body.
Oh and mine is a 98 and and has 82600 on the clock. I did tow my Jeep about 120 miles on saturday though. Needless to say It's going up for sale when I get it back tomorrow. Mine started to spew about a half mile from my house.
