I have known about the ignition in my Expedition needing a key with diode for a long time. I had spares made to keep in my wallet, just flat blank keys that open the door in case I lock the "real" one inside. Now I have a 2001 Taurus wagon. Figured I could do the same...key grinder at local hardware says "NO". Even the doors will ativate a "theft mode" if they sense a key w/o trying to unlock them. True? Any way to get a key that isn't a half inch thick? Alternatives? Appreciate the help (again)!! I have never heard of the door keys needing it until now. THANKS!!!!
You can cut regular keys to open the doors. It works fine, I've done it several times. It doesn't do anything to the theft module until it's in the ignition switch. The chip reader that reads the keys only has a range of a couple inches.
