I have read the Tech Folder in depth about the EGR and I decided I am going to disconnect it this weekend to see what happens. But to be superclear, this will disable my EGR, correct? Therefore, the air that is brought into the engine will be exclusively comming from my air box. My goal here is to make the engine more efficient. And from what i have read the sole purpose of the EGR system is to be more emission compliant it has nothing to do with making the engine run better in fact disabling it can make your engine run better but more importantly over the long run it is better for the engine. Is this all correct? I have an '06 so it looks like all I have to do is pull a couple plugs, right?
Thanks for the thread to read.. it looks like you may or may not loose Top End boost and in an '05 or later you need to get a custom tune to ignore the EGR code, right?
From that a disel tech told me he highly recommended getting rid of the EGR all together.. He mentioned blocking off the ETR altogethertoo but I do not think that pertains to my '06.
I think as long as you are aware of potential egr issues you can pretty much avoid them by doing preventative maintenance such as coolant bypass, fuel additive, etc. Do you need to take in your truck for emissions in WA? It's been a while since I lived in WA so I'm not sure. Here in Nevada they visually check for EGR, Cat, etc plus hook it up to their computer and do a "smoke" test. lol I'd like to see their faces if someone takes a truck in with a tuner that makes all the black smoke come out.... that would be funny.... "Did I pass?" lol
This is where you can purchase the Coolant Bypass Filter System: http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=324
I ordered from these guy's and they are great to deal with (they are a site Sponsor). I did it myself, it is actually very easy to do. As for fuel additives most people use Power Service in the gray bottle (summer) and the white bottle (Winter). I just ordered a few bottles of 404 diesel additive from Lubrication Specialties. It's supposed to be really good. Do you live in Issaquah?
If you are interested in doing the egr thing, you need to remove the y-pipe cut the scoop out of it, weld a plug in the y-pipe orplug the egr cooler inlet. (this is assuming your egr cooler is not already defective, nor the oil cooler) Then disable the egr valve.
This is the basic answer to "doing the egr thing".
