I am getting ready to purchase pistons for my 00 7.3L and I have done quite a bit of searching on this site with no luck. What are the technical difference in the pistons from 95-2003? I copied this out of the Navistar catalog and it shows several different part #'s. Aside from the obvious Compressed Distance difference, what is meant by (.0050, .0067 min clr etc...) in the underlined parts? Would all of these theoretically work in a 00 7.3L despite the listed year applications? Pin diam. seems to be the same, rings might be a little different but I can't find anything to say which ones won't work and why. The last two underlined specify a .010" reduced comp. ht. but show different year apps.
Don't get the ones that are .010 reduced compression. It takes away .010" material on the top of the piston, which thus effectively lowers the compression ratio, which is only advisable if you machine the heads more than .010, or you want to lower the compression for a race engine. Taking material out of the bowl would be a better way of doing it, because it doesnt mess with squish volume and quench, etc technical stuff you dont need to worry about. anyway, I'd go for a new set of Mahles, not stock replacement, but if you so desire, pick the top set of underlined ones.
