you guys realize there are 2 important things bringing down the price of oil right now. even though there have been hurricanes in the gulf already and the there is tension w/ Russia, prices are not jumping like they did late last year.
1.) the upcoming presidential election. Both sides are trying to make everyone happy even though it doesn't seem that way. After 11-11-08, it will skyrocket.
2.) and the most important!- July, August & September is the quarter they use to calculate the current years inflation. remember, last year we only had 2% inflation. with the current fall in oil prices and the housing market slump, I wouldn't doubt that they would figure this years inflation rate about the same. even though we were paying almost 40% more for fuel. could you imagine if they had to adjust all SS, disability and welfare checks to reflect 40% inflation?? I am by no means a pessimist.
I'm so far from being a pessimist that I consider myself a world class optimist. Personally I feel the government really has little control over the price of oil other than taxing the hell out of it, and their abject refusal to drill for our own. The more oil the companies sell, the more money the government takes in. Their income is a fixed amount per gallon no matter what the price is. So if folks like me stop driving their fuel gobblers the income for the government falls. So high prices help them not at all. In fact it hurts them.

This post deserves some rep points, but I need to spread it around some more.

Thanx Dan, I hand them out all of the time myself to the point that I get shut down by the rep police force. But seem to get very few back. Guess everyone agrees with bdox on my small brain capacity.

Can you guess why Pelosi and her clan took off and chose not to vote on the energy bill??? I still laugh at friends, that are libs, when they realize how much gas went up right after pelosi and her clan got into office.
Prices have been steadily falling for about 2 weeks now in every state. An exception yesterday though for some reason. All states either fell or stayed the same except for 2. The big surprise is Delaware where it jumped 17 cents for some reason, and Kansas I think where it went up 4/10th's. What happened with Delaware?
I paid $3.99 on the way home tonight at the local Chevron station. Right down the road Wal-Mart had it for $4.69, which is confusing since Wal-Mart is usually the cheapest. Go figure...
