C6 Problem

Hello Everyone,I just bought a 1967 f250 CS with a 390 and was told it's a C6 trans. when starting from a stop the trans will slam into what I thought was second gear, if you got any power on it will rev then slam I'v since discovered that it's actually missing 2nd completely and going into 3rd, I discovered this by putting shifter in 2nd gear and starting from stop and when shifts into 2nd slips real bad nothing there, The Guy I bought it from say that only started when he put the Eledobrock 4 barrel on it,Is there something to adjust or check or do I have a shot transmission? I bought the the truck anyway because I have a rebuilt C6 with less than a 1000 miles on it in my 1970 that I plan on scrapping out,,Thanks for any info. P.S. No shuddering or hot smells after driving it for 70 miles

1967 as original: it's a 352 2V and an MX Cruise-O-Matic.

No 390's (or 360's) till 1968. No C6's till 1968.

The VIN engine code is the 4th digit. 1967: Y = 352 2V.

The C6 transmission pan has a large notch in it, and has 17 bolt holes. The MX Cruise-O's trans pan has 14 bolt holes.

The shift dial of a 1967 only has an L and two green dots. There's no D1 - D2 like C6's use.

If your dial has two D's, you may have bought a 1968. Post the last 6 digits of your VIN, that will determine the year.

The only one who can tell a 390 from a 428, a 360 from a 352, or a 410 from a 332 by looking at the engine is Superman, because he has X-ray vision.

1958/76: All FE engines look virtually identical. The valve covers changed in 1965, getting holes for oil caps, smog valve, subsequently the oil fill pipe used 1958/64 was removed.

Otherwise....that's about it.

Line up three complete FE engines: a 1967 352, a 360 and a 390 from 1968/72. There's no way to tell one from the other by looking at them..no way.

That really depends on what tranny it is. There may be an adjustment for the band, or there may be a servo problem, or a valve body problem.
Is the fluid burnt smelling, or any hint of any color other than a nice shade of red?

All Ford 3speed automatics have had that shift pattern.

Not in 1965/66, and some 1967's.

P R N O o L = C5TZ-7B033-A

o = Starts out in first / O = Starts out in second.

If it's a C6 you could have a broken or WAY out of adjustment intermediate band or a servo issue. Not likely a valve body problem. Should be repairable in the vehicle. Run the band adjustment screw in and see if the band is broken or better yet pull the trans pan and take a peek.

Ok I was able to get under it and I do only have 14 bolts holding on the pan The shifter does have P R N D 2 1 Vin is F25YRB35471, I'm pretty sure it's a 390 because it runs a heck of a lot stronger than the 360 I had.

If it has a 390, someone stuck it in there.

With 14 pan bolt holes, the only trans it could have is the MX Cruise-O.

F25 = F250 2WD

Y = 352 2V

R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant

B35471 = 1967 (1967 serial number range: A00,001 thru B82,000)

The only way to know for sure what engine it has is to measure the stroke.

352 (and 360), the stroke is 3.50" / 390, the stroke is 3.78"

If it's an MX Cruise-O give it to your local scrap guy for weight and get a C6.

(sigh) Young un's.

Before the C6 was introduced, the auto trans EVERYONE wanted for their projects was the BIG Cruise-O-Matic...the MX C-O-M.

Now alla you consider it junk. Well..that's your opinion.

The MX C-O-M was the best trans available during its time frame. Yes the C6 is better, but there's nothing wrong with the MX.

If you want to see a TERD of a A/T, you don't have to look any further than the AOD, which is FoMoCo's all time WORST trans they ever made, even worse than the A4LD, and that's saying something!

The trans was introduced in 1980, and...

The Warranty costs to fix the POS by 1985 were higher than ALL the previous A/T Warranty costs combined...back to 1950!

If you want a TERD of a A/T, the AOD will fill the bill just right.

Is that you, or did you get that info second hand?

I've owned over 40 Galaxies, Thunderchickens, and a 1958 Edsel with the MX C-O-M, I've never had a problem with any of them.

Something smells and it ain't burnt Type F ATF!
