I have no idea one might be stronger than the other?? since our truck has the factory towing package

4.6 motor: gets the A code transmission and the 8.8 axle
5.4 motor: gets the Q code transmission and the 9.75 axle
both motors have the 8.8 front axle (reverse cut I believe)
Ford has been doing it since the 1997 models. not sure why. to me, it would be cheaper to have just 1 axle and transmission.

The a code is the 4r70w the Q code is the 4R75E the 4R70W goes back to the start of modular engines and the 4.6 it was used behind both 4.6 and 5.4 trucks from 97-2004(heritage models) . The 3v 5.4 came with the 4R75E trans which means 4 speed, rear wheel drive , 750 input foot pounds of torque and E for electronic valve body. Neither trans shares anything in common with the E4OD.
