holy cowl

I am debating if I should weld up my cowl vent or keep it. It seems cool to reach down and pop it open but the truck would look better with a smoother look. What have some of you done and were you happy with the result.

If you are going for a true restore job use it. If you are going custom or darkside loose it. I'm thinking about using mine as an air intake for the engine that flips open when you punch it. As kid I remember everytime those things were opened I got a face full of dust.

Later Man...

Where are you from? Get hot there? If you have A/C then welder’ up, no A/C keep it useable.

I left mine. I have A/C but I find that if it isn't too hot, the cowl vent is nice. I end up using it a lot. Usually use it early in morning when going to a show. On the way home in the late afternoon the temp is up and I use the A/C. If you get in stop and go traffic it is useless and I turn on the A/C.

I use mine almost daily. No way will I seal mine. Then again...mine works great and does not leak.

Notice it is open in my avatar.

I forgot about that picture Keith. Yours opens....and scares people.

Mine kept closing when a semi went by at highway speeds. Found out the nut had backed off the spring that holds it in place. That fixed it again.

Did you know that in Canada, dropping a Chevy engine into a classic Ford is endorsed by all branches of the provincial and federal government, but welding up the cowl vent on any classic American car or truck is considered a Class 2 felony?

Really!

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like I should keep it and put a new seal in.

I know a lot of people really like their cowl vents and that's fine with me.

Aside from the fact that the PO used silicone sealer to seal my cowl vent shut because it leaked so bad, I found that after I fixed it, all it was really good for was to blow all the contents of the ashtray all over the inside of the cab. I find the vent windows to be a much better source of fresh air in hot weather and so I'm keeping those.

I sealed my cowl vent. The first five pics in this gallery show how I did that: 1956 Ford F100 4x2 - Body Mods

I really like the smooth look filling it gives the cowl
