Help please! I've recently bought a 1991 Econoline E350 based Born Free RV. On the first trip out the brakes failed and I had it recovered. the recovery garage repaired the brakes and as the transmission wasn't functioning normally I had them drop it out and send it to a transmission specialist 60 miles away. The transmission was rebuilt and returned and then refitted by the original garage only to find it doesn't behave any differently ie it seems stuck in limp home.
The Reg document says the engine is a V8 Diesel 7240cc but the 8th character on the vin No. is M suggesting International V8 6000cc how can I identify the engine and does anyone have any ideas about the transmission? Neither garage are convinced it's anything to do with them even though I've spent £1000 with the first garage and nearly £2000 with the transmission specialist.
Thanking you in advance,
Bryan
For a 1991 E350 diesel the engine should be the 7.3 Navistar (International). Known as the pre-powerstroke or IDI diesel. There is a page on here dedicated to the pre-powerstroke diesel so any engine problems post there. As far as your transmission is concerned, if it has an overdrive then it should be a E4OD. These are electronically controlled and need things like the vehicle speedometer to be working. You may need to check for error codes to see if you have an electronic fault. If you go to fordfuelinjection.com you will see how to pull codes without a code reader. You could also post this problem on the transmission page of the forum, giving as much information as possible as to the symptoms. Good luck with it.
