I have a 1990 F150 XLT, 351CI with an oil pressure gauge problem. The gauge is a variable one (not just a dummy light). Sometimes when I turn the lights on, or the air-conditioner full blast the oil pressure will read higher than usual. This truck had a new oil pump about 60k miles ago, and has NEVER had any variation in oil pressure (no matter what the temperature, RPM, or anything else!). Lately the pressure will read lower than normal. It never got lower than the 'N' in the normal range, and it should be between the 'R' and 'M'. A few days ago I was driving through town and it read low again. I pulled the tranny into Low and let the RPMS get above 3000. The pressure pulled up to where it should be, and the rest of the trip home on the interstate it never budged (just like things used to be!).
I've replaced the sender on the side of the engine. The rest of my gauges work. The panel has battery, oil pressure, fuel, temperature, RPM, and speedometer.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Mar-02 AT 08:35 PM (EST)]Ford has had lousy Amps & Oil pressure gauges for years.
Sometimes, people just put in mechanical gauges and forget about it.
Others check for the proper Gauge sending unit> Making sure they don't have a Idiot Light Unit instead.
Other people put teflon tape on their sending units when installing them > Teflon tapes inhibits the grounding properties of it.
I suggest attaching a gauge and test it > Just for piece of mind>
