I have a 73 f100 that originally had a 360 but currently has a rebuilt stock 302 in it.
I have some knocking that I think is related to the lifter on the passenger side #4 exhaust. I was thinking if I was going to replace one, might as well replace all of them. And I see that the parts are specific to certain years of engine build.
So here is the 2 part question. How can I identify what type/year 302 I have so I can get the right part.
And the second question is what other things should I replace/look into
to bring out more torque/low end power from the engine? This is an offroad vehicle.
It's nearly certain you have the 302 windsor, these things are as common as dirt and were first produced back in the late 60's. What shape are the heads if you view them from the front, are they sorta wedge shaped or are they rectangular? Where the exhaust manifolds/headers bolt on is the head surface near vertical or angled down?
Casting numbers are found on the rear lower area of the block.
An RV cam will produce favorable results as will longtube headers.
A lifter is a lifter is a lifter.... When it comes to Fords nearly every one uses the same lifters. The first thing you need to figure out is what kind of lifter you have. If you have a flat tappet hydraulic lifter, then any flat tappet lifter that fits any 302 will fit yours, as well as everything from a 140 to a 460. If it's a roller lifter, then you need a roller lifter. Posting the codes will help on this end. Like Conanski said, a slightly stiffer cam would be a good upgrade, and replacing lifters without replacing the cam is iffy, especially with a flat tappet cam. If the cam lobe is damaged, (which could be the source of the noise as well) all you will do is ruin a whole set of flat tappet lifters. While you can replace one bad lifter (or all of them) with a new one, you should not reuse any flat tappet lifters with a new cam. So, unless you are replacing the cam, I would just replace the one bad lifter (at least untill I was sure it was going to work.) Roller lifters can be re-used.
Your transmission and gearing will also help in the low end department, no matter what engine you have. I love my NP435's 1st gear. It could pull anything with a 4 cylinder under the hood the way it is geared.
