I have a 1991 F250 with a C6 Transmission. I can't put it park. It stays in Reverse. I have to start the truck in Neutral and shut the truck off in reverse. Is this just an adjustment or do i need to replace the steering column?
Two thoughts here. Either the shift lever Park locking device is faulty or the linkage inside the trans is faulty. On the early trucks the shift lever was locked in Park by the ign. switch actuator in the steering column. On later trucks (probably yours) the lever is locked by an electric solenoid. I would suspect this is faulty. Have a look under the dash for a solenoid on the shift linkage. Disconnect it and see if you can now shift into Park. Another thing you can do is disconnect the shift linkage down at the trans. If you can then shift the trans into Park by moving the lever on the trans then the problem is in the steering column linkage. If not the problem is in the trans. Someone who knows the later system better may chime in. Hope this helps.
I recently went to a Ford dealer and bought a part they think is bad. Its a parking switch F2UZ-15A851-a. The diagram he had located it near the shift linkage on the transmission. I cant seem to locate it...
From the previous post... What does the solenoid look like and where exactly would it be? In the steering column or under the dash?
The only switch on the transmission is the one that operates the neutral safety switch and also the reverse lights.
I`m not sure but I think the solenoid operated shift lever lock is `92 and up so your truck should not have one.
I don't know about 92+ trucks, but no 91 and older truck has that stupid electric solenoid that locks the column in park and won't let it go in gear without pressing on the brake.
I always slap it down in gear without touching any pedals! Unless i'm parked on unlevel ground. Or if the parking brake is on, witch I always put on when i'm parked on a hill. I step on the brake before releasing the parking brake.
