Greeting all, as you can see This is my first post. I found this site and read enough threads to make my eyes bleed.
Now my question is should I even start this project?
The project if I choose to accept is: my dad has two Fords ( 87" - 6.9 350 4x4, and a 90 something 7.3 450 2ton dump.) that have been sitting for around three years. No one has touched them. Should I spend the time and money to get them running?
To be honest I have no clue what shape they are in, since no one has turned them over in that time. Body on both look good, little rust but other then that they look fine. Both are diesel so I have no clue if the lines are full of gum or not.
Also have a very limited budget do to being broke....LOL Trying to get them running so I can use them to make extra cash.
first you need to see if there is any info as to why they were parked to begin with
with that info some direction can be discussed
other wise you will have to invest in a couple of new batteries and some fresh fuel and begin
Welcome to FTE! Have you been able to get your hands on these trucks? If it were me, I would buy a couple of batteries and see if I could get each of them to start, moving the new batteries from the first truck to the second until I know if it is worth investing in a battery setup for both.
The 450 " should have no problems" They parked it due to needing a new windshield. So I have one Battery for it. I hope to get another by this weekend.
The 350 was parked due to needing a new oil cooler. The sad part is they have had the replacement part sitting on their work bench this whole time.
My plan to start is with the 450, due to the fact I have about 10 tons of pipe to scrap. And my little Nissan Frontier will take way to long......LOL
My parents have two greenhouses that are 32*200 and they wanted them taken down. So after getting the first one down. Now I have to move the stuff. They have basically shutdown the Bus. three years ago, and let the place fall down. Even though they seemed to stop doing repairs around ten years ago. So since I have free time, I am trying to help. I figure I can use both trucks for side work, ( 350= plow truck / 450= ????? rent out the dump not sure yet.)
I was going to try and dump the fuel tanks and put in fresh. As a side note, is their an additive I can put in the old to bring it back to life?????
Well plans have changed. I am going to work on the 350. I plan on installing the oil cooler after I get back in about a week and a half. I have two Ford Shop Manuals ( engine/ body-chassis-electrical) and the Haynes Techbook for Diesel. So I have read what it will take, and does not look like fun.
well, the worst thing about the oil cooler is it's a bear to get to.. you'll need to unbolt the motor mounts and jack the engine up somewhat to be able to get the bolts out/get to bolts. no need to remove the engine, just plan on it being loads of fun. good luck on the repair. on the fuel note, wouldn't trust fuel that's been left in a tank for that long. just bite the bullet and dump it and clean the tank and put fresh fuel in. save you lots of grief in the long run.. just my advice, what it's worth.
