460 Hard Start

460 from a 1976 Grand Marquis in my 1980 F-150.
Problem is since I put it in, it often turns over slowly/has trouble cranking. Acts like a lazy starter but I have replaced it and problem didn't go away. Also have replaced altinator, regulator, starter relay, battery, battery cables and MSD Blaster coil. Not sure what else to try. Starter is getting 12v from relay.
Seems more likely to happen when warm and turns over a bit better with a full 13.8v on the battery. Sometimes turns over quickly like it should but more often bairly cranks. Once it starts it runs great till I shut it off.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Make sure the battery ground goes directly to to the engine block and the connections are tight and clean.

next time it tries to turn slow, stop, and tap on the vacuum advance with something...sometimes they stick and it will make the motor hard to turn over....i came across a guy in Mineral Wells, Texas that had a 4x4 76 F-150 on 38's, he was broke down in a walmart parking lot so i offered a hand....he told me he spent all day doing exactly what you did replacing everything he could think of with no results....i thought about it for a minute and asked for a hammer or something...the best thing he had was a rusty pair of visegrips....so i used them to tap on the vacuum advance, and told him to turn it over...he looked at me like i was a moron, but told his ol lady to try it...it fired right up....he was speechless...i told him about my 460 doing that to me on several occasions and it worked everytime....then i told him about FTE, but i have no idea if he ever signed up....

Is the 12 volts at the starter, when the starter is lugging?

I personally have never seen an advance unit hang, never heard of one hanging either as they have a pretty hefty spring.

This sure sounds like and electrical problem.

If it was gonna stick, I would think it would freeze in the no advance position as that would be the position it would be at rest in with the engine off and the return spring holds it in.

Well the ground to the block is something I will double check. Makes sense for sure!
The vacuum advance tapp trick would be easy to try, so why not. Makes me wonder if all my vacuum lines are connected correctly. I replaced the intake and carb during the swap as well (Edelbrock RPM and Holly 770 SA) I will double check my vac lines... didn't consider a possible vacuum problem would affect startup.
I will try these this weekend and post back.

Ok, so, here's where I'm at.
Tried tapping the advance, as well as adjusting the position of my distributor. (new timing chain thought maybe it was slightly out of time) No difference.
Replaced battery ground and connected directly to block (Was connected to alt bracket)
No Difference.
Took off cable to starter and ends looked a little corroded. I shortened it and put on new ends. no difference, but will replace with new cable.
Only luck I had was when friend turned it over I hammered starter at same time and it kinda chugged forward. So it must be the starter even though it is brand new.
Looks Like I will get a new alt cable and a high torque starter and see where that gets me.

Sounds like a starter gone bad. Pull it and have it tested at the auto parts store, most have testers now or just replace it. I would venture to guess worn and/or sticking brushes.

Make sure your new starter is the RIGHT starter, I bought a new starter from NAPA a couple years ago, the new starter bolted up no problem..... just didn't start the truck, barely crank when it turned at all. Took the starter back and the parts guy told me he had a heavy duty starter with a lifetime warranty for $53 more..... no problems since.
