Post 68 column change

I am converting to power steering in my 68 F100. I got a column from a junk yard, unfortunately they could not tell what year it was from, it did have a two spoke steering weel. Today I was splicing the wires and I thought I was careful to match them up correctly, my existing column had had the turn signal selector chaged at least two time before and there were two splices already with three differnt color wires. Now that I hook it up, both front blinkers go on emergency and the back come on with the selector but don't blink. Is there a easy way to figure out the correct wiring or do I go though all 56 possibilities. Any help is appreciated.

Richard

Well Ford was fairly consistent with wire colors so:
Wires running inside steering column to disconnect.
yellow/black stripe=power out to left rear brake/turn signals
green=power out to right rear brake/turn signals
white/blue stripe=power out to right front turn signal
green/white stripe=power out to left front turn signal
red/black stripe=brake light power into to turn signal switch from brake light switch
Now if you dont know what the wires are on the truck side...
They should be the same color with this exception: there are 2 white /blue striped wires in one pin, extra one is for turn signal indicator on dash. And there are also 2 green/white striped wires in one pin, extra one is also for turn signal dash indicator.
Hope this helps.

Ok I may have misunderstood your question.... like I have not done that before
You can test what wire feeds what by connecting a 12 volt jumper wire to the wires out to your lights one at a time and seeing what lights up.
The turn signal/brake bulb filament should be brighter than the parking/running lights. The brakes use the same filament and wiring to the rear of the truck as the signal lights do. The front signal lights are a direct feed to the bulbs. They also are brighter than the parking/running lights. The dash idicators are fed from the front signal light circuit, so they should light up when you are on a front signal light wire.
So once you find the wire that feeds the right rear brighter filament that is the wire that goes to the green wire out of the turn signal switch. Then it is just a matter of lighting the lights and splicing the correct wires.
Time consuming but fairly easy.

Sparky,

Your first response was to point and helped a lot. Thanks for the advice, it is starting to sink in. The wires coming from the turn signal are as follows: Blue with yellow stripe, green, yellow with black stripe, red with black stripe, blue, green with white stripe and white with blue stripe. The truck has two connectors a six pole and a two pole. On the two pole there is a yellow and a green wire and on the six pole there are five poles used with a blue with yellow stripes, a green, two white with blue stripes, a light blue and one with two reds.

Any sugesstions on how to connect them? It half way makes sense and then I over think and lose it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Richard

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Mar-02 AT 01:21 AM (EST)] Ok I can't seem to find what the steering column is out of, trying to go by wire colors
But here is my best guess for what the wires from the turn signal should go to:
Blue=power in fron signal light flasher
green=RH rear signal/brake
Yellow/black stripe=LH rear signal/brake
Red/black stripe=power in from brake light switch
Green/white stripe=LH front signal
white/blue stripe=RH front signal
Blue/yellow stripe=I cant find it anywhere ???????
but it could be power in from the emergency flasher

As for the truck side, I cant find my wiring diagram for the pre 70's trucks Shouldnt have cleaned up this place.
But I will take an educated guess
6 pin plug first:
pin with 2 red wires=LH front signal???
pin with 2 white/blue striped wires=RH front signal
pin with blue/yellow stripe=power in from emegency flasher???
pin with light blue=power in from signal light flasher
pin with green=brakes ???

2 pin plug next
yellow=LH rear
Green=RH rear

The truck side is pure guess work. We either need a wiring diagram for your truck to figure them out. Or do the 12volt jumper test and see what lights up.
Sorry I cant be of more help I should never have been talked into organizing my workshop :-X23
