Oil Filter Size

I just checked the listing for an oil filter to fit my 2004 (new body style), F150 4.6 v8 and it lists two different filters - one Metric and one Standard. I checked on the valve cover and it has "REP: FL-820-S"

Does anyone know what type filter I need?

Thanks!

FL820S is correct. You can always use MOTORCRAFT® FULL LINE CATALOG OF PARTS FOR FORD, LINCOLN OR MERCURY VEHICLES
to look up your parts.

ps.. I wouldn't put a Fram filteron a lawn mower let alone a Ford truck.

You have the Standard threads on your oil filter stud. In other words - your engine was built in Cleveland in lieu of Windsor

i just went through this with my new 4.6 stx.....you want the bigger of the two thread holes.....(the 820-s)
just my 2 cents, i dont run fram on anything anymore....i run Motorcraft 5w 20 synthetic blend and Motorcraft oil filters. nothing but ford goes on my ford anymore!

you dont neccessarily want the bigger of the 2. The metric filter is for engines built in Windsor Canada. And the standard filter is for engines but in Cleveland Ohio. The auto part store can look up your VIN and determine this. If not you will need to call Ford and ask them. You can also count the number of valve cover bolts to determine this too, but at the moment i cant remember what ones are what. One is 13 the ither is 11. Old age catching up.

all use the Motorcraft FL820S or the Fram PH2 filter.

I recommend the Motorcraft filter. It's cheaper and is a better filter than anything else for the money.

If you look in the oil filter catalogs you will see 2 filters listed for the 04-08 4.6s. One is meteric one is standard. The standard is the same one listed for the 5.4. I own a 4.6 and 5.4 and first time i changed my oil i had to ask the question. We ended up calling the dealership to find out why 2 listings.

OK using the VIN Decoder it lists:<TABLE style="BORDER-RIGHT: #990000 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #990000 1px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #990000 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #990000 1px solid" width=600 align=center itxtvisited="1"><TBODY itxtvisited="1"><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD style="PADDING-LEFT: 15px" itxtvisited="1">Assembly Plant: </TD><TD itxtvisited="1">Dearborn: Dearborn, Michigan</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

So what I need to know is the correct thread size - metric or standard. Based on what you say it would be Standard Thread for my truck. I'm looking at the Amsoil oil filter and it has two listing - Metric or Standard Thread.

Thanks for all your help.

The easiest way is to find out is crawl under the truck and get the number off the filter that's on there now. If you want to go with a different brand any parts store (even Wal-mart) can provide you with a cross reference list. Some will also have a small number after the filter number which on the bottom of the page will tell you if the filter is standard or metric thread.

The FL400S uses 3/4x16 thread, The FL820S uses a 22mmx1.50 pitch.

The valve cover states which filter to use, I don't understand your confusion.

Well that was what I was wondering. I know the filter part number FL820S but not the thread size. I am looking at getting an Amsoil filter and it lists two different types - Metric thread or Standard thread.

Looks like Metric is what I need, but there seems to be a lot of confusion from other people as to correct thread size.

Thanks for you help!

You're welcome for the help but I would still reccomend using the Motorcraft filter, seems Amsoil has the same attitude that Fram has....If it screws on and doesn't leak it's good enough.
