magnetic guages

Hey, I'm trying to figure out whether my engine temp guage and my fuel guage are working (neither is registering). Is there any way to test them with an ohmeter/voltmeter (which is what I have)? The guages are on a 92 Explorer. Any help would be appreciated!

I have not worked on anything as new as a 92 but on older ones you can
take the wire off the sender and ground it and if it pegs the gauge the gauge is ok.I think this will work on yours. Is this one of those
that you have to replace the gauges in pairs on?Hope this helps

Fuel guage testing. Install in place of sending unit 10 ohms resistance from guage wire to ground with key on. Should read full or above by 2 pointers width. Install 73 ohms resistance. Should read empty or below by 2 pointers width. Temp guage, 10 ohms is hot, 73 ohms is cold.

Hey guys, thanks for the information. I hope this doesn't seem to silly, but I'm new at the electrical end of things and had a couple basic questions. 1.Is the resistor just a piece of wire with a certain resistance, or is it something I need to pick up at the parts shop. 2.Do I have to attach the resistor directly to the battery ground, or will the frame of the vehicle do. Thanks again!

The ground can be any convenient location. I have a tester ($150) that will dial in 0 to over several thousand ohms. For a one time test try Radio Shack for the nesessary resistors.

One more thing ...
I got the instruument cluster out and there is a harness that plugs INTO the cluster. There's no wire to ground! What should I do?
