I keep reading where people say you have to fill up the oil filter on the new f150 before replacing it. Does anyone do this? Is it really neccacary?
Thanks for the help,
Will
it is mainly done on motors have vertical filter mounts not horizontal (ie the 5.4 in my sig). that proves what i mean as a feel good action it isn't a necessity to fill the filter prior to installing.
look at the oil filter with the gasket up and the hole you see where the threads are cut into, just pour the oil into there and screw the filter on.. nothing special
I fill the filter about half-way on my F150 and it doesn't spill. It helps reduce the amount of time the engine is running without oil pressure - same reason the filters have an anti-drain valve.
Yeah, I fill mine about halfway. You might slop a little by the time you get the threads to catch, but no biggie. That's what that little drain tray is for. Just don't rev it on startup till you build pressure.
Isn't there a way to build oil pressure in the system before startup? What I'm tryin to say is the trick like turning the key to the on position and put accelerator to the floor while turning the key which turns the engine over (but doesn't start) until you get oil press.? Correct me if I'm wrong.??
Yeah, you could do that, that's the correct procedure. But I don't bother with all that, I just fill the filter about halfway and fire it up with no throttle, with some oil in the filter these motors build pressure quick enough.
I've done oil changes on several different vehicles and never tried this before but; if you left the filter off and filled your engine with oil, wouldn't the oil spill onto the ground because of the lack of a filter?
I think you are misreading. You don't leave the filter off.
It's not that I misread anything, I know you don't leave the filter off. What I'm trying to ask is, "if" the filter was left off when you filled the engine with oil, oil would leak onto the ground. Therefore with the filter on oil would naturally fill the filter. That is unless, with the filter on, it creates some sort of bubble that prevents the oil from soaking into the filter. Then when the engine is started and the oil pump forces the oil to flow through the filter. So is it really necessary to fill the filter?
