transmission leak

I have a 93 F-250 with E4OD trans, which has a trans cooler in front of the radiator. One of the hoses going to the cooler chafed through and it dumped some trans fluid on the ground. I replaced the hose, no sweat, but the thing I was wondering about was this: if the fluid had all leaked out while I was driving a long distance, would there be some indication of what was happening so I could stop before the trans self-destructs, or would it just suddenly seize up?
