I'm having a problem with my truck running rough until it warms up. It sounds like it's running out of fuel, but after it gets warmed up there is no problem. The filters and fuel pump have been changed. It has just had a new air filter and oil change. Anyone have an idea on what my next step should be?. A friend of mine says it might be the oil sending unit.
Is it running rough as in will barely get down the road, or just a lack of power? Is there any whistling or other noises that occur when the truck is running poorly? Do you get a check engine light on the dash? Do you get any smoke out of the tailpipe when it's running bad? If so what color?
How many miles are on your truck, and how long has this been going on? When you say warmed up, do you mean full operating temperature, or just a little warmed up? Has the problem been getting worse or the symptoms lasting longer?
An oil sending unit is used to run an oil pressure gauge. We have an Engine Oil Pressure(EOP) sensor which is really more of an on/off switch for our gauge. If you've just got a slight loss of power with a whistling noise you may have a stuck EBPV. If it's a severe case of bad running that's getting worse you might have an IPR or HPOP issue, or some other thing I'm not thinking of right now.
Have a little patience and we'll help you get this figured out.
Your fuel injectors run off of high pressure engine oil, so to me this kind of sounds like an issue with the cold oil causing issues, but when the oil warms up some things smooth out. What are the temps outside at night where you live? Does it do this only in the mornings, or will it do it in the afternoon if the engines been off for quite a while?
Have you tried plugging your truck in for a few hours to see if it will warm the engine enough to fix or help the problem any? That would be a free test that might give us some clues.
It's been around 70 here at night. It does it the first time that I crank the truck each day even if it's at noon or in the evening. I"m not sure I understand what you mean by plugging it up.
zanks, welcome to FTE! The folks on here are GREAT!! Keep feeding them information and try the things they suggest and in no time I bet you will resolve this issue. There are several different things that can cause the problem you are having. Just keep us informed.
mine is doing the same thing. It only does it the first thing in the morning though. I was wondering if the hpop oil needs changed. I know that it mixes with the other oil in the oil pan eventually, but do you guys think that would help. I saw a video on you tube where a guy changed the hpop oil seperatly, and he was getting some pretty gross oil out of the hpop reservoir.

The HPOP oil may be a little blacker when you look at it, but I don't think changing the oil will help. Out of curiosity I sucked the oil out of my HPOP for the first time at 258,000 miles and it just looked like the engine oil does when it's due for a change. I think the guy in the video was pulling it out of a truck that had been poorly maintained. Feel free to try it, I just don't think it will fix your problem.
One more question on this. I took the fuel filter out looking around and noticed that the fuel drained out of the fuel bowl. Is that normal?
The fuel bowl should be full until you open the drain. Is the drain valve leaking and fuel running out of the drain tube? Make sure the drain valve is completely shut. Or do you have fuel leaking into the engine valley? If so you may need new drain valve o-rings.
Here is a link to fuel drain o-ring replacement LINK
After reading your first post again and then your last post your rough running may be due to the fact that your fuel bowl is draining and the leak prevents fuel pressure from building as quick as it should. With KOEO and fuel pump running check to see if you can see any leaking fuel. The fuel pump will only run for about 20 seconds and you will have to recycle key. Get a second person to cycle the key while you look for leaks. Be careful not to run your batts low.
