Question Gauge install guidelines not in tech folder?

Hey guys been doing my homework on a new gauge install and found good info and instructions around the net at sponsor sites.

I was just wondering if anyone( resident experts/techs)
would be willing to put some detailed instructions in there. Seems like this would be a great addition to the tech folder.

The pros and cons of diff types of sensors locations etc. Any tips at all in there would be great.

Is there anything that you specifically need help with or just looking for someone to post a sticky in there. I have done the guage install on quite a few trucks so if you need anything I can help...maybe.

I was thinking of a sticky I guess. Seemed like some good basic info would be good to have in there.

I am planning on a 4 pod pillar mount boost, tranny, EGT ( pre or post turbo?) voltmeter or ????

Trying to find the time to get it done

Thanks for all of that info I believe that will answer my Questions. On the egt pre and post teh way you wrote it it seems like they are going both in the drivers side exhaust manifold? Which I know cannot be right. That was one of my questionsThe psot turbo egt probe I have seen goes in the down pipe(?) as a banded thermocoupler with probe.

Also I read that a probe in the transmission test port is not an accurate reading is that true?

Going to research all of those links..............................

One of the gauges I left out of my install was the oil gauge.
I ended up with 5 autometer gauges.
Boost
EGT
Trans Temp.
H2O Temp.
Fuel Press.
I think if a guy was to install an oil gauge the oil filter cap would be the best, however this is a coveted application as an oil bypass filter will utilize this placement as would both oil pressure and oil temp gauges. Then there routine oil filter changes where having a line on the cap would become a hassle.
It seems an oil port somwhere else would be a great asset to tap.

Mark, you're such a posting guru. Thanks for all the gauge related info.

I have the aluminum billet oil filter cap from EliteDiesel.com and oil temp sender. It is no problem at all to take off the oil filter cap. There is a connector about 5 inches from the temp sender that you unplug before removing the billet cap.... no hassle at all. Maybe in the future they will make an oil filter cap with 3 ports on it for temp, pressure and bypass!! I don't think you would get accurate readings with a "T" fitting.

One other concern regarding the oil filter cap is my need to put a torque wrench on it once a new filter is replaced which means fitting a socket on the cap. With an oil line on the top, R&R is the only option unless someone finds a place to "tap" in the oil system where doing an R&R to the line and fittings won't be necessary each filter service.

Below are my dash install pics. I like the dash placement better than the pillar as I would have lost the grab bar and the one over the mirror brought the mirror down too far and it also obstructs the lower half of each dial.

The 5 gauges are set just a bit brighter than the factory dash lights so when my eyes adjust to long haul night runs,
I can turn down the cluster way low and the five gauges are lit just brighter than the OEM dash cluster.
This is those times when you're 'bout spent and oncoming light are a bother.

Nice pictures!!! You can't beat a King Ranch interior! I didn't realize you used a torque wrench on the filter cap so that would make perfect sense where the sensor would get in the way.
My boost gauge is a little brighter than the other gauges so I took a "sharpie permanent marker" and put a couple of stripes on the bulb which worked very well. Now it's about the same brightness as the other gauges.

Thanks.
You can also use a half watt 1.2k ohm resistor for your bright gauges to dim them down closer to the brightness of the dash cluster.
(The 1.2k ohm is just a reference point to begin adjustment, you may need to go with a 980 or 1.4k ohm)

For those gauges that have an incandescent lamp instead of L.E.D.'s can benefit with the use of those little colored condoms that slide over the lamp to change the color of the dial.
