I was wondering if any one knew anything about F250 Highboys I'm looking in to buying one but need to know more before I can settle on on a specific year.
Ok the highboys are years only from 73-early half of 77. Any of the ones that are 77.5-79 are called (lowboys). I have a highboy and i think its the toughest thing ever made. They can clear at least 35" tires from stock without a lift.
Yeah I thought so the fist time I saw it in the classifieds he had it for 3800 then he finnally dropped to 3200 and we talked him down to 3000. Probly the reason we bought it was cause I liked it so much and I needed a truck, coulda also been the 428 in it.
No it had a 428 and it threw two rods right through the pan and it cracked the block two days after I got it out of the exhaust shop it had unwelded headers on it and when they welded em it warped em so they had to track down manifolds for it and ended up bein two weeks and 700 bucks, they did inspect it for free though. I have had two motors in it since the 352 and the 390 in it now. We couldnt listen for a rod knock cause the exhaust was so loud.
I paid $2K for mine a year ago. It's a '76 Explorer, NP435/NP205. VIN says it's a 360, but who knows. It has the front discs, which were standard from '76 on.
The only rust is from the battery getting launched into the fan and spraying the passenger side of the engine compartment with acid (before I owned it).
The truck was well on it's way to becoming a basket case when I rescued it. The two previous owners were kids who thought it was a play toy and wasn't worthy of being maintained.
Oh, I almost forgot- these trucks are easy to steal. A friend of mine had his '72 stolen from a boat ramp parking lot while he was out in his boat, and mine got swiped a year ago. The cops had it back before I even knew it was gone, but it cost me $200 to get it back from the impound lot. My ex-father-in-law had his '75 stolen from his driveway, but he got it back a week later, minus tires and wheels.
I put a "Club" on the steering wheel for now, and I got an alarm system that I haven't put in yet. I don't think Ford had a locking steering column until '77, which makes these an easy target for any scumwad with a screwdriver.
Wow you must live in a bad part of town. Nobody will touch my truck I have a bar in the bed and another behind the seat just in case some one does try to get into it and I see em.
[quote=UTfball68;6434357]Any year is great, somewhere in the 74-75 year range they went to disc fronts. 300 6 is a torque monster and a good in-line. 360's were decent engines, but often become the better 390 on sale day (almost the exact same engines). Same case with the 351M/400's...but these are low end brutes and can become very good, nice, respctable engines with about 2 grand worth of goodies. Lots of guys do the 460 swap.quote]
'76 was when disc went up front, 360/390's (FE's) are more then "decent" fuel efficient they are not but they are far superior to the 335 series 351/400 engines when it comes to torque and/or horsepower.
The VIN engine code is the 4th digit: 1967: A = 240; B = 300; Y = 352 / 1968/74: A = 240; B = 300; Y = 360 / 1975/76: B = 300; Y = 360 / 1977: B = 300; H = 351M; S = 400.
