Fuel system concerns

04 F-350 just passed 45,000 so in due diligence I changed the oil to Rotella 5-40 synthetic and changed the fuel filters. The filters were horrible and extremely difficult to get off. I drained about 4-5 ozs of water as well. It appears that no one changed the fuel filters before. I bought it used at 34,000 and was assured that everything was changed. Should I be concerned about anything. Thanks in advance for any input.

I was reading my 6.0 power stroke manual and according to it the fuel filters dont even need to be changed untill 60k

I will quote my owners manual, Every 24,000 KM (15,000) miles replace engine and frame mounted fuel filters. Water and dirt kill injectors in these 6.0 engines.

Not sure what you were looking at, but "ljutic ss" is accurate. In addition, Ford states in severe service you need to change them even earlier at 10,000 miles.

I understand the need for the changes every 15,000 miles. Now that I know they weren't done properly is there anything I should watch for? The trucks runs quieter now with the filter change.

If you're concerned about the fuel side of your injectors run a dose of 404 from Chris at Lubrication Specalties. I've used it and it worked to give me a bump in mileage, telling me that it cleaned things up pretty well for me.

Run some Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne through it to lube the injectors.

He might have read the regular owner's guide that only talks about the gasser fuel filters. I think those are called out as changing every 60k. The diesel engine supplement definitely states every 15k like you guys are all telling him. I try to change mine every other oil change which is around 10k.

If the fuel pressure dropped too low it could have damaged injectors. If it did, you should see DTC's and also should see performance issues. What kind of mileage are you getting. That could also give you an idea if anything is performing poorly.

Your mileage sounds about right so you probably caught it in time. Follow 69cj's advice and use a good fuel additive (alcohol free and a water "demulsifier").

Ya I miss read it its every 15k I did it every 20k on my 7.3 and they always looked clean I wouldnt have even pushed it to 60k even if it was that. I just bought a motorcraft filter set on ebay for 20.50 I thought I did ok as them seem to be atleast 60 for the set everywhere else
