Guys I've got a new bed for my 03 that was a factory take off that's been sitting upside down in a backyard since 04. It's in almost perfect shape except the supports across the bottom of the bed are rusty, not really bad but enough to be slightly pitted. I usually use a wire brushed grinder to get rid of it but it's not working this time and there's several places that I can't get to. What do I need to use to eliminate the rust so i can undercoat it an dnot have to worry about it after I get it on the truck? I plan on having this truck as long as it'll run so I don't want the bed rusting through in a few years. Thanks.
Depends how good you want to do it.. Eastwoods rust coverter, then 2 coats of rustbullet then undercoat with waxoil hardwax....Thats the ultimate.. So where in between do you want to go.
I like Ospho. It's largely phosphoric acid and it seals rust up and turn white when it done. It will need to be covered when you done. I'd use POR15 and cover it some spray paint.
Well I want to do it right but I don't want to put $500 on the bottom of the bed either. I was thinking about Rust Bullet but didn't know if anyone has used it yet and if it's as good as it claims.
I wouldn't do rust bullet by itself its not good on rusted metal it will fail. Its real good over sand blasted new metal. The eastwoods stuff is good. And rust bullet seals it up. 2 or 3 coats.
I personally would paint the undercarriage with rustoleum gloss black, and then just undercoat it, and then install the bed on the truck. If you look at the undersides of a ford bed it is usually mostly the grey primer they use. Since beds are common take off items still, and current models fit 99 and newer, there is no shortage of them around. I would not go overboard on the project.
