Well, I'm finally getting around to replacing the valve cover gaskets on my '94 4.0L AWD Aero. Any advise before I start. Any techniques to help make the operation smooth and to reduce the chances of unanticipated problems. The engine is overall in good condition, and has no cooling system issues, so I see no reason to go any deeper into it than to just do the gaskets of the immediately effected areas. Any things to look out for. Also is this a good time to replace the oil pressure sender since mine is bad? Any recommendations are appreciated.
lots of 3/8 extensions of various sizes and u joints for same
short sockets help
believe the upper plenum has to come out, makes for easier access and removal of VCs.
torque the lower intake manifold bolts while in there.
check the ends of the rocker arms and push rods for wear thru, common of 4L OHV
use neoprene replacement gasket only
use Permatex "Right Stuff" or old school Super 300 is my favorite
paint a coating on both sides of gasket. let tack up till sticky
put in.
torque the VC bolts only to specs, believe Ford calls for 2 steps of torquing.
A/C unit (set off to side on hoses) and alternator have to come out to make it easier.
