Need Help....Quick!

Alright guys, I know there has been tons and tons of discussions on here about the cam shaft position sensor, and I have read the majority of them. All of those posts describe the truck stalling out or loosing power while stopped or cruising down the road. My truck has just started doing this. Right around 2000rpm the truck will suddenly just loose power and drop all the way down around 800-900 rpms for a split second then shoot back up to 2000rpm. Ford sent me a recall sheet for the cps about 5 months ago. I took the truck to my local dealer bout 2 weeks after i got the recall info and they replaced the sensor(supposedly). If they did replace it, then why is the truck doing this? Could the sensor that they put in already be going bad? And is it possible that they just looked at the sensor and thought that it looked alright and didn't replace it?

they should have replaced the sensor. to me that don't sound like a cps going out, but its so cheap to replace, go ahead and replace the cps. others with more knowledge will chime in soon.

Don't sound like the usual CPS problems but with the new one's, anything may be possible. Cheap enough to change out (less than $20) and if that's not it, you will already have a spare. How is you oil level? Low oil could do that as could a clogged fuel filter.

I think Barry is on the right track with this one......they most likely DID replace the CPS, seems weird they'd go to the trouble of having it in the shop, and not replacing it. I would check your fuel filter, air filter, and oil level. Always a good idea to start with the simple stuff first......then work your way up and go from there

Would a throttle position sensor do this? Just a thought.

It's possible, but not all that common. They usually have a dead spot in them and it tends to not come back. Have you checked all the other things listed above? Oil level and condition would be my first guess.

The oil and the oil filter is less than a month old and I replaced the fuel filter. Don't know about you guys but I've had some real trouble with dealers in this area...thats why I originally thought they might have screwed me(but who knows). The truck does this in spells. It will run fine for a couple of weeks then do this for 4 or 5 days. Come to think of it, it didn't do at all today. I thought it may have been bad fuel or water in the fuel. I also originally thought that it was doing it only when the fuel was getting low (maybe sucking some junk off the bottom of the tank), but i filled it up on tuesday, and it has just now stopped doing the surging. I have gone through all of the vitals and still no luck. But like i said, it runs great for two to three weeks then goes through its little spell of acting up for a few days!

Do you think it might be the HPOP going bad? I'm pretty sure that it isn't a tranny problem as well because the truck still slams through the gears with ease. the tranny was replaced at 85000 and the truck only has 140 on it now.

Clint, I have heard that some of the replacement CPS's were failing. Can you get your codes read to see if anything is stored? May not trigger the SES light since the engine comes back to life. Mine is doing the same thing as yours but only one time every 2-3 weeks.

I have heard the same thing about the sensors Mark. Someone told me that some of the dealerships were installing the old sensors because they had them in stock. My Diesel guy is on vacation till sunday, but I have spoken with him and he has said to bring it by the shop Monday morning so that he can take a look at the codes. Your right when it happens there is no SES light or and warnings so it kinda makes me think that it is nothing major(Knock on wood). As soon as he runs the codes I will post with the results. Have you ran any codes on yours Mark? If so what does it bring up?

if it is the CPS....there will be codes definitely. I scanned a friends truck recently and it came up with the CPS code, can't recall the code number though.....

I haven't read codes yet because I have a new one that I need to put in to do the recall. (I know the parts manager at the dealership.) Probably would be a good idea to read the codes just to know what is going on.
