What can cause a rythmic vibration, it drives along alright then a vibration starts, vibes a while then stops. then it goes through the cycle again. But now I am getting a vibration through the steering wheel that feels like a u joint vibration that I experienced in another vehicle. I had another vechicle that did the rythmic vibration also but I forgot what caused it. Anyway would like to hear ideas. I just got this old truck its a 72 F 100, by looking on the door I found its a F 102 version, so its pretty heavy long bed. Its been sitting a while, has a little rust but it starts right up and runs like a top, so I can't help but love it.
Either grab the driveshaft and wiggle it at the joints to see if they are loose. Could also be a bad tire(belt separated). Jack it up, let the air out of each tire and watch for an area of the tire to collapse in as it airs down. That is where the belts have broke and won't support itself without air. Sometimes you can see/feel it when aired up(as it might be a bubble area), but usually when you air it down it's very noticable.
The drive shaft may not wiggle, but the u-joint maybe dry with a little rust in it, you said that it had been sitting, like Freightrain said, drive shafts and tires are were to start looking on a rig that has been sitting a while.
is it speed sensitive? like does it start at 55? does it change when you brake or if your rpms are higher/lower?
im with the others but explaining it as a rythmic vibe makes it seem less sensitive to the actual speed of the vehicle but maybe more tire/suspension related.
Yes it does have 2 piece shaft. Thanks for the info and I would appreciate any more advice you can give me. I bought the truck with big dreams of using the engine in a Falcon body I had found, but the Falcon body got snapped up. Now I'm falling for this truck, it starts great, don't smoke even at start up, runs like a top. Its just big and gawky feeling to me. I would like to do things right, so center support kit it is. I could also use kingpin bushing advice, can you give a ballpark figure on that repair so I can kinda know if I am getting taken to the cleaners.
Or the splines could be worn too at the slip joint. Thus causing an outta balance condition. Unlikely, but driveshaft could have been dented and that will cause a shake, or just lost a balance weight. Do a close inspection of the tube and make sure it's smooth and round.
King pins aren't expensive themselves, it's finding a decent shop to do the work. DON'T allow the use of the NYLON replacement bushings, make sure you demand that the BRASS style gets installed. If you are getting it done, might as well get the best parts put in. The nylon bushing are quick fixes and good for driveway repairs but if you have someone do it at a shop have them do the brass version. It entails removing the spindles and having them honed to size after the brass is installed. Much better quality job and longer lasting.
Also, you could have an engine mount or trans mount grounded out, exhaust hitting the frame or crossmember, axle bearing, wheel bearing, etc. You're just going to have to poke around.
