I believe that FORDS dominance in the truck market was in the 60s & 70s. That is when they came up with built ford tough. They truly were the best truck on the market. Fleet maintenance records of most companies show this is true. But TODAY that isn't the case. Ford has lost a lot of valuable time screwing around with IH & that junk POWERSTROKE. They have introduced 4 versions since hitting the market, 2 in just the last few years. The best diesel that ever was in a Ford was when Mentzer Detroit Diesel in Reno NV installed Detroit 3 & 4-53s in them. That was in the 70s. To see one go on the Arizona Chapter I posted a picture & history of one.

Sheet, the IH IDI's are about as tough as you can get. The PSD is just about as tough as it gets. I can't remember all the posts I've read of running the IDI's without oil. Fill um back up and drive them another 100K miles.
Truck pulls mean absolutely nothing.
They're a far cry from what a truck is supposed to do. Plus it's easy to manipulate a winner. More weight on one truck. Better tires, ect, ect.

I will have to agree on the IDI's. They are slow as heck, but run forever. My cousin has one in a 92 F350, extremely slow, but it has 300K on it.

Wow, so it lost the front shaft, as if that means anything.
We have no idea the history behind that truck, he could have done a thousand pulls and miles of off-roading, we have no idea of the stress and work the truck has gone through just as it may have been a mall crawler and the shaft happen to just break.
Same can be said for the Dodge, in another 20k miles the trans could fry or its shaft could break also while the Ford's trans could be great and the shaft last 200k+.
Built tough stems from endurance when used properly.

I totally agree on this also. I will take slow and DEPENDABLE any day. Just last week the odometer quit working at 502,000 miles and the truck runs great. Total repairs have been less than $3000.00 since I bought it new. The truck still makes cross country runs regularly pulling 10,000 to 12,000# loads. I will hate the day I have to retire it. I would pay twice what I paid for another new one like it.

Amazing the little amount of money you have put into it too.

An IDI is Indirect Injection where fuel is injected into a prechamber to be vaporized and heated before entering the combustion chamber. The injectors and timing are controlled by the mechanical injection pump. No PCM or sensors are needed to crank and run. Will not leave you stranded if the battery or starter goes out, (provided you have the standard tranny) just turn on the ignition switch, roll it down a hill and let off the clutch. If the run/stop selonoid goes out just tie it off in the run position and you're on your way. Very simple design.
