thinking of trading in my 07 fx4 off road for a 09 fx4?. thinking this time with a manual 5 speed instead of the auto. differant color also. mine is red fire metalic which i love but thinking maybe dark shadow gray? loaded it up and enjoy the ride. might as well live it up untill we run out of gas??.am i stupid for doing this or just keep mine. 5700 miles new and auto. loaded up pretty much as i ordered it from ford almost 2 yrs ago. love them rangers.. pro's con's??.
A truck isn't a truck if you can't shift it, get the 09 with a manual tranny. I've owned 6 rangers now and only 1 of them has been an automatic. You may have to order it, as there isn't many manual rangers setting on the lot, a few, but not many. If you order it, this time you can get all the bells and whitsles + the manual tranny. I would also opt for the ranchero shocks and torsion limited slip rear end. These item's use to only come on the level II's. Now you can order them with any off road package from what I understand. Also interest rates and rebates are strong right now, an excellent time to buy. As for gas, it isn't going to run out any time soon, at least not in our life time. The experts say, we have a 200 year supply just here in north america. Also thier makeing too much money off of it to run out. They would make synthetic oil just to keep robbing us ha ha.
I don't know about the chrome shifter, maybe. It's really no big deal, I bought the level II chrome shifter from my ford dealer for my 04 ranger 4x4. I had to buy the boot, shifter and ****, I had 200.00$ in it total for all 3 parts. I don't know how you would get that shifter on an ordered truck since they have dropped the level II option. We know you can still get the level II goodies, like the torsion lsd, it should be no different with the shifter. However, you can make the shifter part of the deal. Tell your salesman that you will buy a ranger from him or her if they have the level II's chrome shifter installed and thats only if it can't be ordered on the truck. That way you will get your shifter one way or another hee hee!!!
on the other site a guy bought a 08 fx4 with the level11 shifter?? have to head up to the dealer where i bought mine and ask fred the scoop. that would be real cool looking ride. just think dark shadow gray with the goodies and 5 speed. now thats a truck..
On my 02 Ranger, I took the manual transmission over the automatic. Much later I found out that I lost 2,000 lbs of towing capacity in that decision.
I also blew out the pressure plate prematurely due to some extremely inexperienced trailering (say, backing out of a twisting, hilly driveway) on my part, combined with teaching several people how to drive stick.
I chose the manual because I like shifting, and I thought it would be more fun to drive.
Bzztt. Wrong. It's not a sports car. It's a truck. There's only so much fun you're going to have driving it.
If I had to make the decision again today, I'd go with the automatic, no question.
At the very least, check the specs and see how much trailer weight and/or payload capacity you're surrenduring for that manual transmission, and evaluate that against how you plan to use the truck.
'Fun to Drive' is a matter of taste, and there's no accounting for that. Lost capacity is lost capacity, and it should definately figure into your decision.
when i ordered my 07 fx4 i wanted a auto for resale. i like a manual but i knew i could tow more if i have a auto. thats why mine is a auto trans tow package. thanks.
Sure there is somewhat of an upside-down issue but you are good on your odo reading and yes the auto trans is probably is better for resale in the overall market. I agree with Wendell, it is a good time to visit your lonely Ford dealer. He should be interested in a late model used Ranger and dealing with the way things are. But if not it is real easy to say no thank you and walk out.
As a couple others have mentioned, it's probably a good time to buy a truck. I can't exactly indentify the models but I've seen some big rebates advertised for trucks in the paper. Although, I don't know how well dealers are dealing on truck trade ins. You might be better off selling outright especially with that low of mileage vehicle. Let us know how it goes and good luck getting the vehicle of your dreams. I've been thinking along the same lines as you.
I perfere the manual in my trucks. You don't really loose any towing capacity, ford just lowers it on a manaul for warrenty reasons. Ford doesn't know if someone buying a manual tranny truck knows how to drive it or not. A manaul tranny ranger will pull as much as an automatic if you know what your doing and even if you don't, but the clutch will wear out quicker hee hee. A manaul trannyed ranger is funner to drive than an automatic and not near as boreing. I've had 6 rangers and all but 1 has been manual and I've never had a tranny related issue or even replaced a clutch yet (knock on wood).
