Thinking about buying an EX but not sure what power plant I want. I have no experience with diesel's and I know that a diesel will last longer and provide more torque but also are more expensive to maintain? so please help me make my mine up and input will be appreciated thanks
Depending on your use...I'd give you differing answers.
For the 7000# LOADED TT in your sig...the 6.8L would tug that thing all over the country without breaking a sweat...sure it uses slightly more fuel doing it...but $$$ wise...it is about a wash at the pump.
So shop around for the one you like best and get the best deal on as now is the time to buy these things...haggle haggle haggle and go for the one that floats your boat the most and you will be very happy...especially when compared to that 5.4L Expy with 3.55's! LOL
Now if you are planning on upgrading that TT since you are upgrading your TV...well...I tug a 9000# TT all over the country...been thru the Rockies twice, Big Horns, Black Hills, Sandias, Appalachians, Smokies and the hills of Utah...so I KNOW the 6.8L has more than I need...but then again I've got 4.30's behind my V10...which DOES make a difference...
But again...shop till you drop and find what you like...and unless you plan on tugging well over 10K #'s...either power plant will suffice.
I vote for the 6.0 its a great solid engine that will never let you down let you tow almost anything you want and get decent MPG doing it and its just fun it say " I got a turbo diesel" lol
if you don't travel often, then the 6.8 would be your best bet...
if you're interested in a bigger trailer or travelling often, and have a big family, the 6.0 is the only way to go...we got back from a trip to Yellowstone a couple of weeks ago...pulled the toy hauler over Teton Pass...i was glad i had a PSD!!
Like the others, it really depends on use. When I was looking, the additional cost, both of the vehicle and the fuel, did not pencil out to get the diesel, so I went with the V-10. Tows the 7500# TT no problem, loaded with 2 adults, 2 kids, 3 labs and all the junk that goes with us. My use will most likely be 5000 miles a year or less. Of course I still looked at all I could, before finding the one that I got at the price I wanted to pay. Good luck and have fun!
diesel is 4.49 and 87 gas is 3.52 today. I have no problem with my v10 pulling 32' tt but hind sight being best, I wish I would have looked harder to find a v10 with 4.30 gears in it. Never owned a diesel so I can't praise or knock them but I am glad I am not paying 4.49 per gallon right now.
hope this helps
Well as far as how I would be using, I'm looking at up grading my TT to a 29 to 32 footer at about 9k max weight and that exceeds what my Expy's can handle, have two kids a home yet, and yes planning on some long trips to Rockies, Yellowstone form PA ( yea long haul ), sell my 97 EXPY as it payed for itself couple of times. Can't sell 01 as this is wife's baby and that's our travel EXPY no TT and besides wont get what it's worth, so in short EX will be towing TT not much else maybe.
cbradford, just noticed in your signature that you have an Outback. How do you like it. We love ours. Also just curious, have you actually weighed your unit. Mine is a 28' RSDS and is only a few pounds shy of 8500#'s with 960#'s of tounge weight. Weighed mine at the Cat scales.
FordxFour, no never had it weighed just going by what the tag says and yea we like it as it was our first TT has only one slide, now thinking about something bigger, yours has two slides?
Outback tags the weight of their travel trailers as bare. No options including A/C, Fridge,Awning, etc. are calculated in the final weight. So you may want to weigh it. Yes ours has two slides. The queen out the back, and the dinette slide out the side. We had to do a little hunting as Outback cancelled the flooorplan that we have. They did away with the rear door and added another sofa, don't know why they did this as the RSDS was one of their best sellers. Also saved $12,000 due to the economy going sour and I'm sure paying cash also helped.
I think you know better. Many of the early 6.0s do *NOT* have a good reputation.
early 6.0's do not have a good reputation...that is true..
Ford has bent over backwards(or forward really) getting issues resolved for customers...when the 6.0l was first introduced all you would read about were turbos and EGR valves...through programming and hardware changes, alot of these issues are not as common as they once were...
do 6.0's have weak links?...yep...every light duty diesel engine does...6.0's have come a long way and are much more reliable than when they were first introduced..
the two biggest problems seen now are headgaskets and EGR coolers...people make a bigger deal out of HG's than they really are...EGR system problems can be permanently resolved also...with the prices/values of these trucks falling like they are, a bargain can be found..leave enough money on the table to correct the original design problems and you've got a great truck..my $.02

I second this once I get these Head Studds installed and the EGR system blocked off I will have a truck that is as relibale as my 7.3.
