There must be other factors at work here.

At least in Charlotte-Mecklenburg (NC).....The spending has out-paced the rate of growth of new students.

And public schools are one of those things paid for by EVERYONE.....Whether or not you have children, or if you have children but are home-schooling or send them to a private school, you are STILL paying tax money to the public school system.

So....It's not pay-as-you-go.....And contributions to the system far outweigh usage FROM the system....Yet there is a 'shortage' of money?........I don't think so.

in Cali if you own a home that is more then 500 SQ FT you pay a school tax. the state doesnt care if you have kids or not or where they learn you still pay the tax!

and the points about having to learn Spanish or any other language is a good one, if you want to live here learn english or not eat its up to them!

i dont mind property taxes going towards education regardless of kids or not, teachers are underpayed now, and not every kid has an access to computers, nor adequate text books. without education, police, courts, and corrections are tied up with chump change criminals, that take away time and man power to go after the real criminals that are an actual threat to society

Since when do you need a computer to get an education? I sure as hell didn't have one. There is only one reason to not get an education in this country - because you don't give a rats *** about your future. Giving the schools more money, and giving the kids free stuff, is not going to cure that disease.

If we started letting a generation make their own stupid decisions, that might start fixing some want-too's.

I don't either......So long as we give an honest ear to the concept of private school vouchers.....Think about it....A school system may assess a $9,000.00 price tag on the head of a student in the system.....So let's say the parents pull the kid out of the school and want to send them to a private school---and they get a $4,500 'voucher'.....Well, they're STILL paying the taxes, their kids are not at the public school.....and even with the voucher, the school system is still $4,500.00 ahead of the game.......

But the public school system is a jealous monopoly, as well as a political hammer.......

It's not that teachers are underpaid, it's that administrators are overpaid (the highest paid county workers in my country are the administrators......). Also, could it be that the school systems are buying goodies not necessary to the desired education of the young-uns?.......Hell, give ME good textbooks on History and Geography, a blackboard, a nice shaded spot under an old-growth tree outside with a good breeze, and 10 pupils, and I can turn out 10 good citizens more educated on those subjects than your average big-city school system......

Lunch will consist of a sandwich and a piece of fruit.....And we'll take daily strolls through the hills to exercise the body and mind....And other 'active' physical pursuits (soccer and archery and shooting) will be encouraged.

And I promise....I won't try to teach them sex education or alternative lifestyles and cultures either.....

They need to learn the basic's in school instead of learning how to use a computer which they start teaching children here in head start. They know very little of history, science, and math. It is sad When I go to Wal Mart and go trough to pay for my items and they don't know how to give change.
If we couldn't pass history, math, english, science, you did not get promoted at all you had to repeat them all over again if you failed one class. it's not that way now just go to summer school for a couple of hours a day for 3 weeks and you pass automatically. Where is the education in that?

thats the kids comprehension.........anyone who completes high school had the required amount of math, history and science classes

be realistic about it, if the kids dont feel like its important for them to get the education, then they wont. inner city or no inner city.

supposedly theres an education problem in this country, low this and low that. so why is it that we always here about budget cuts in school programs etc...

But you see, they don't. They just don't. And the school system pushes that because they don't have their priorities correct.

Any doofus can use a computer, IF he has been taught the three R's. There is no point if sticking a computer in front of Johnny if he can't do basic math, spell, make up stories to write, look up something in a dictionary. You teach a kid to do the basics and then it's a 15 minute job to teach them to use a computer. I know, because I've worked with enough older generation new computer users. I didn't have to teach them how to read or write, the school system of the 70's did that for me. I just had to teach them a few basic computer skills. 20 minutes, tops.

Don't kid yourself. Kids are sitting at the computers playing games and looking at **** on the internet. They are NOT learning desktop publishing or spreadsheets. There are computer science classes for that.

I have to agree there was many times when one of our sons came home from school and said when they went to computer class to do their work there was **** on the computer.

Are you talking about home or school? If at home from what I know you need a credit card to get the good **** as they call it. And at my house, my kids use my laptop to get on the internet and I walk right by and look at the screen off and on while they are on the net. I also check their e-mail to see what is going on, just like their cell phones. But at school, you have to sign (the parent and the kid) a permission slip to use any computers. If you are on any site that the school does not allow you are kicked off for the rest of the year on any computer in the school.
