I have 225000 on my Ranger and about 15000 miles ago it started running rough - bad idle, power dropped off, mileage went down, etc - and the check engine light came on. The code showed a mis-fire on 2 cylinders. Replaced the plugs and wires and 1 cylinder was fixed but the other one still shows a mis-fire. Idle and performance was improved but still not real good. The shop I took it to said the fuel rail was partially plugged on that bank (passenger side) and that this was common with the 3.0 & 4.0 motors. The injectors have never been cleaned. I have the top end off fixing a valve seal issue and was wondering if anyone has had this problem and if the injectors and fuel rail can be cleaned and, if they can, is this something I can do?
I sincerely doubt it's a "partially clogged" fuel rail problem. That's not something I've ever heard of causing two misfiring cylinders on either the 3.0L or 4.0L.
If the problem is not fuel or ignition-related, then you have to consider a "base engine" concern. For example, at 225K, you might want to get the heads checked out. On a related note, why are you replacing a valve seal? What did you see?
You can pull the injectors and send them out to have them professionally tested and cleaned. I've done that before with the injectors on my 4.0L.
FWIW, lately I've been hearing more about camshaft synchronizer/sensor issues with the 3.0L vulcan.
I was getting oil smoke (little puffs) at start up that went away in about 30 secnds or so. Yes, I am going to take the heads in to be checked - valves, springs, etc. I guess it might be a good idea to get the injectors cleaned while I have it apart - can't hurt after that many miles. I was hoping I could clean them myself but if not I will have them done. The new wires and plugs fixed the mis-fire on 1 cylinder but not the other so it might be the injector.
