I just finished doing a set of head gaskets. . . and while I had the heads off. . . I noticed that two exhaust valves were damaged right at the tip where the rocker contacts it. Its like the nitride, nickle, or chrome covering(whatever it is) had peeled away and the tip looked like it was pitting, or corroding. I ended up replacing them. I'll try to get some pictures on here. Truck has 200K on it, anybody ever seen that?

Wow, coating wearing off I can see but pitting and corroding in that oil bath environment I don't know. I too am curious and would like to hear opinions and see pics.
Yeah it looks identical to corrosion. . . but I can't see that either. I wonder if the tip was just breaking down from the rocker beating on it. LIke i said, I'll try to get pictures.

Here is an idea for you.
This sort of problem is a very old one in my field with the old air cooled solid lifter VW engines.
They make a product that we call "lash caps". It fits over the damaged end of the valve stem, then you can properly adjust the valves.
I don't know if there is something like that for the Powerstroke, but these caps are designed to fit over an 8MM valve stem.
When I saw the title, I immediately though tire valve stem and wondered why the heck Tim was posting a question about a broken tire valve stem. Wow, was I way off base.
Unfortunately, I have no idea what could cause that. My mind says that a valve lash out of adjustment could cause some pounding on the stem and damage it, but with hydraulic lifters in the 7.3...I don't know.
