i might have the oppertunity to get an 07 escape. i really like going offroading, but i don't go mudding or rock crawling or anything, more like light sand and light trails. any ideas on if this will be capable of trail riding? i figure just put some slightly bigger, more aggresive tires on it and a tow hook.
i dont see no reason why you shouldnt be able to take it down an old country road i guess is what it sounds like you might do every know and then. Just u gotta have some since when your doing it do go to extreme or you'll get stuck.
I have and 02 escape 2wdrive and just took it to nevada on a trip any ways to get to the lake we all went down on foot with all the stuf i wasnt doing it 2 aways it did good in the lose sand just tunred off the od and looked for a path that wouldnt drag me down and just keep on it about 10-15mph and its all good just had to deal with the limted slip thing pulling a little from one side to the other
I would be cautious about getting stuck. The Escape has good ground clearance but the FWD doesn't have limited slip so you are really driving on one wheel.

I monitor webpages on behalf of Ford and I thought I'd chime in here. Yes, be sure and use caution if you take the 2WD Escape off of the pavement. Even the 4WD Escape, which would get you through a lot of off-road conditions, is not designed for extreme or excessive sand driving. Both the 2WD and the 4WD Escape have decent ground clearance, so that's a plus. However, the Los Angeles Lifeguards put some Hybrid 4WD Escapes through their paces and although the Escapes surpassed their expectations they wouldn't recommend the vehicle be used for "duning". Media.Ford.com. In my opinion, the 2WD Escape is a great SUV but trail riding might be better left for vehicles designed to handle it.
Well, my sis-in-law did some off-roading in a FWD Escape--right off the 605 freeway into a boulder field near the Santa Fe Dam Rec. area. Bent the lower control arm and strut. Otherwise, no problem. (oh, and that stripe down the side from something she passed a little too close...)
So while I don't recommend passing out on the shoulder and rolling into a bunch of big rocks, seems like a fire trail or powerline road should be passable at reasonable speed. Sand? Bring a shovel...
