Rear differential?

I replaced my front brakes last night, went well for my first time doing brakes too.

While I was under the truck though I noticed my rear differential cover had a slight crack in it and was leaking slow.

So I am looking for a new one but I don’t know what type of rear diff I have, Dana…

How can I tell what type of diff I have? And what fluid does it take, also what fluid does the front diff take? Thanks!

Your rear is a 10.25 sterling, the front on an 01' is a dana 50. You can get a rear cover from diesel Manor for about $60 bucks. The rear takes synthetic oil 140w, like this one:

That's the same one in the picture, you can buy it for $60 something with the bolts and washers. It is a Ford rear cover, it comes off an 08'.

I second the Diesel Manor cover. I bought mine for $67 and some change and it was the '08 aluminum cover (comes with bolts too).

You want 75W140 gear oil for the rear. If you have an LS you can either buy the friction modifier from Ford (4 oz bottle) or get gear oil with it in it (like Mobil 1).

actually the rear axle on the 99-07 series F-series has the sterling 10.5 inch rear end if that makes a difference at all

Same cover, only difference is the size of the ring gear.

If the truck is a SRW it is a 10.5" ring gear, DRW is a Dana 80. I have a stock cover that was on my bad differential if you want it. Just pay shipping... I am otherwise going to trash the axle

Just remember, if you go with the '08 style cover, you need longer bolts. The ones for the stamped steel cover are not long enough.
